Yes. Poetry. Anyone else read it? I won't lie, I'm pretty stupid and therefore don't comprehend most of modern poetry, but I still absolutely adore Richard Siken, Hart Crane, and Denis Johnson; Allen Ginsberg and TS Eliot are also favorites.

I need suggestions for other poets, preferably modern, but since I'm a college student, it'll probably be years before I can afford to buy any of the books.

I like the poems in Lord of the Rings, but they're not that modern, so... never mind ;)
Shakespeare isn't modern either, but still pretty great.
William Earnest Henley has written pretty awesome lines as well, but sadly not very many

So, you see, I'm not really a professional, the thing is: I hear or read an awesome poem and think "it's awesome, I bet I'll never forget it" then I put it away and a week later it's gone from my mind.
    Sorry I couldn't really help ^^

Edit: Alfred Tennyson <3, though 19th century is not really modern either.

Can't really help with modern poets. I like Milton, Donne, Blake.

You might try Raymond Souster or Leonard Cohen.
