Has anyone else seen that documentary about the Ph.D. student who has written his thesis about the fact that the Narnia books can be interpreted as representations of the planets of our solar system? For anyone who is familiar with the theory, do you agree/disagree/think it's plausible etc?
I'm not familiar with the theory. Of course Lewis did play around with Mars in "Out of the Silent Planet" and with Venus in "Perelandra." The second of these rivals Tolkien's work vis-a-vis inducing the reader's trance that makes an imaginary world real. It's the best of his fiction.
I've heard of it, but haven't seen a documentary. I'll have to watch for it. I say plausible. The "planetary" qualities are pretty consistent, although I say that having re-read the books looking for parallels. I've heard Perelandra is excellent. I plan on reading it as soon as I can get my mitts on a copy.
There's a theory that the narnia books are representative of the solar system? Could you explain? Certainly haven't ever heard anything about that.
Here's a link that explains the gist of the theory pretty well. http://oxfordinklings.blogspot.com/2006/08/planet-narnia-xi-summary.html Holler of it doesn't work... still figuring the forum out a bit...
