I'm asking this question (this will sound silly) on behalf of my mom. She has a book, which I borrowed and am looking at right now, titled "Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien." It's a fairly large hardcover book, in a cardboard sleeve, and on the cover simply has his stylized initials. It's copyright 1979 and she bought it new. It's got a forward and notes by Christopher Tolkien, and it's "all the pictures (paintings, drawings, designs) by J.R.R Tolkien which were published in a series of six Calendars from 1973 to 1979, with a gap in 1975" (from the foreword). Neither of us, or anyone else we've talked to, has ever seen another copy of it...we don't know if it was ever re-released. She doesn't want to part with it (and was somewhat reluctant even to loan it to me), but she's curious if anyone else has heard of it. Is it a real collector's item, or are there scads of them out there? Anyone know anything about it? It's a really beautiful book.

Hohum. I have never heard of it myself personally, but you could check Amazon to see if they sell it. If its not on there, it would probably be a good indication of the books standing.

But if your trying to locate a copy of it, you could either go to a local book paper and quote the ISBN number! Which is ISBN: 0395606489...

If that fails you could also try contacting the Publisher: Houghton Mifflin

Hello Taiba, I fell on your post whilst looking for an image from this very fine collection of picture to put on my computer screen. How suprised I was to find nothing about this edition except an image of his initials as printed on the front cover of this book ! I bought the book while I was living & working in the Shetland Isles (UK) in 1979 at the cost of £36 if I remember well. I still have the book which is in perfect condition all raped up safe & sound. It would be nice to hear if you have had any other information about it. I've never seen it on sale anywhere else in the UK & I bought the only copy in in the Shetland bookshop
