    Hi,

I’m contemplating purchasing The Book of the Phoenix. I’ve read favorable reviews and the prose looks solid. $12.00 for a 241 page digital copy? It better be good at that price. Any thoughts?

From what I can tell, it looks like a strongly character-driven story/plot, which is the kind of story I prefer to read personally. The premise of genetically engineered people struggling with their humanity certainly isn't new, but depending on what the author decided to do with it, it might be an interesting take on the idea. I don't know this author at all, so before I'd buy that book I'd check and see if there are some excerpts somewhere (is there an amazon page with a "look inside" feature maybe?), or at least check out some of his/her(?) other stuff. By the looks of things (s)he's published at least one other novel and some short stories.
It looks like the book was published by DAW, which is a traditional publishing company, so I'd guess that's why the book is 12.00 to buy. If I liked the excerpt and had extra cash to burn I'd probably bite the bullet, give it a try, and hope that I was pleasantly surprised.

I'll think on it. I'm getting to be so picky.
    I'm starting 'The TreeMakers.'
Not crazy about reading it in First Person, but the reviews are good.
