Yeah I've taken to doing a copy every time I draft a long reply, just in case the text of my reply goes missing somehow

    Have you guys read this?:

I've read elsewhere that the EU is considering economic sanctions against Israel. Now I'd like to see that happen.

yeah, there is one country in the entire world which can get away with this, it seems. And then to imagine Israel is going quite soft on the EU (after all, it needs the EU to exist) - remember what it did to the aid ship which left from Turkey. They got labeled terrorists.

Does anyone know why Israel opposes the term "occupied territories" in legal documents while they think "territories under occupation" is alright and why the Arab nations oppose the term "territories under occupation"?
Occupied territories, territories under occupation: the same thing, no???

I read a bit about that in Jimmy Carters book on the Palestine (We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land). He spends quite some time focussing on nomenclature. Just about every word in connection to the conflict has some connotation or other. And especially the Israelis are very careful about the words they use.

I can't remember whether you're Flemmish or Walloon, Julie, but I would like to recommend "Het Zijn Net Mensen" van Joris Luyendijk; it's also been translated to French ("Des hommes comme les autres") and English ("People Like Us"). He offers a really interesting perspective on the Arab world, especially on Palestine/Israel from the the Second Intifada onwards. The book is now slightly dated since it was published prior to the Arab spring. But it's definitely worth your time, probably more so than Carter's.

I'm Flemish :) Thanks for the recommendation, seems interesting!

I think I might have found why Israel is shunning the term "Occupied territories": because of this:

I'm thinking when they use the term "territory under occupation" they don't fall under this bit of international law?

    hahaha, tl;dr. Sorry ;)

It's a bit like "enemy combatants", though. Some words are not to be used or else the consequences might be unpleasant. Art 49 sect 6 is a good reason though not to use the words occupied and territory in conjunction...

    Great find, Julie

I have one that kind of looks like one but not quite yet. As a political scientist I have to keep my neutrality, of course. :)

lol there's no point saying that to Foin. After all, he doesn't do political analysis for a living. Turkey will take up arms if that's the case. :p

youknoiw, youmay be right about this thing

but i think that calling the territores occupied is quite wrong feomthe beggining
if we wern'tso nice aqnd did to the arabs what they wantedtodoto us.
or even would not agreed for them to stay in our (yes, our) land then our problems were much smaller...

    There's a button called "spacebar"... :p

And what do you mean if you weren't so nice? You took most of the Palestinians' lands, the Jews only controlled about 6% the Holy Land and in a day, they were given more than 56% or so.Then the Arabs didn't like that of course and you won the war of 1948...and then in 1967 you took more of their lands and established an oppressive regime on their lives.
