Arg! I can't believe that there isn't gonna be any Scourging of the Shire (PJ said that in FOTR:EE commentary, mirror of Galadriel). I think it's very importent part!, cause it shows how much that hobbit's matured and all.

Yes, it is a shame. I love that part in the book. But it would make the movie excessively long. It was really the only thing that they would be able to cut out without changing the plot line dramatically. The outcome is the same, regardless of the Scouring of the Shire.

    But I do sympathize. :(

As PJ has said (and I fully agree!), a book reader will happily read to the last page. But a movie audience won't like the good guys winning, and then losing, and then winning again. It'll slow things down way too much right when you should be celebrating. Good for the book, bad for a movie.

    *** SPOILER *****

And besides, PJ wants to eliminate Saruman as a bad guy early, so the focus moves to Sauron. PJ has said also that Saruman "dies by the same hand, by the same method, just at a different location." So that verifies the photo I've seen of Wormtongue on the ground at Orthanc with a knife in his hand and murder in his eyes. So expect Saruman's demise in the first half hour of the movie.

Yes, I've also heard the theory that....

    Spoilers!

Wormtongue throws the palantir out of Orthanc, it bonks Saruman in the head, so he falls out the window onto the spikey wheel deal (the infamous pic). Wormtongue comes out to the balcony to see what happened. Legolas shoots an arrow past Grima, Grima laughs b/c he "missed", the arrow comes back and buries itself in his skull.

I don't like it. It's just another chance for Legolas to show off.
If you'd ask me, it would be better to have Grima just be locked up in Orthanc for the rest of his days, alone and friendless, like the rest of his life.

Even though that scene won't be in the movie, it'll still be awesome!! :)

Here's a spoiler pic for those that love spoilers(*like me!*). It's small though....any larger and it'll be really blurry.

I think it would be great for Gimli to get Grima. I would love to see it happen.

That would be cool. I get tired of the Legolas show-off times too.

Many of you will hate me for saying this but I am personally glad that Tom Bombadil was cut out. Not because I didn't like that part of the book but only because it scares me to think of what they might have had to cut out to keep it around three hours.

I actually agree with you. They would have had to cut out many for important parts to fit that in. I like Tom, but of all the things that could have been cut, he was the best one to give the ax to.

Is it possible that they would have the Scourging of the Shire in the Extended version of RotK when it comes out?? Like some have said, this is a very important part of the book and I don't think Tolkien would have wanted it to be edited out!!!!

The answer to that question we will have to wait out.. In the mean time, try to focus on the here and now... i.e. TTT: EE & ROTK!?! But yeh, fingers crossed eh? ;)

There won't be a scouring, they never even filmed the scouring. How could it even take place if Saruman is killed before he even reaches the Shire?

I was thinking one part over, and in that scence with Sean Astin/daughter Elanor is already around the age of 2-5 (not exactly sure). Now unless Sam was busy before he left the Shire, does this mean they will have Frodo waiting some time in the Shire before he leaves Middle Earth? When else would they have Sam coming home a couple years after War of the Ring?

Frodo stays in the Shire for a few years in the book before leaving for Valinor.

I sympathize with everyone, I will miss the scouring, and miss Grima killing Saruman.

    *** SPOILER ***

Grima does kill Saruman, it's been stated that "Saruman meets the same fate, by the same hand." Meaning Grima still cuts his throat. Plus I've seen a photo of Grima with knife in hand and murder in his eyes, on the floor of Orthanc.
There's been speculation that Grima then runs off and Legolas kills him with an arrow, but we'll have to wait and see.

I know that. What I was wondering is if PJ would make use of this. It was quite some years between Gandalfs appearances in the Shire, yet PJ didn't note the significance of this.

I find that the Movie seems to advance faster in many places. I just did not get the feeling from the movie that the characters spent great lengths of time traveling, battling starvation, etc.

I know what you mean. The book supposedly took place over years, the movie seems it only took a month or two. Still, PJ did an incredible job.
