I'm curious to see what he'll come up with.

Jackson did a fabulous job with Lord of the Rings - even though the book geeks still missed a lot in the films. I hope that Del Toro will do a great job too and not destroy the 'lead-in' to these great movies.

Re: Any news about the Hobbit movie

BilboHobbit.com has posted a transcript of Hellboy II: The Golden Army director Guillermo del Toro's recent chat on BD Live, concentrating on the questions asked about the two "Hobbit" films. Here's a few:

Q:There any professionals who worked with you on Hellboy II that will be joining you on the Hobbit?
A:Hopefully Mignola, Barlowe, Spectral Motion, Guillermo Navarro and others…

Q:Will there be any cool creatures in Hobbit like Hellboy 2?
A:many many more and we will be pushing the goblin kindgom. we will be pushing smaug, the spiders of mirkwood. we will be pushing them to the edge of technology where we will fuse animatronics and cgi into a seamless new art form in creating creatures, i think.

Q:When does filming for The Hobbit begin?
A:it will begin in 2010 and we will shoot for about 370 days or so…

Re: Any news about the Hobbit movie

Im struggling to figure out how they are going to make The Hobbit and the gap years fit into a single cohesive story. The sections from the addendum have a lot more to do with LOTR than they do with the Hobbit and the climax of The Hobbit is much bigger than any resolution to the necromancer or black corsair storyline as they are told in the addendums.

Re: Any news about the Hobbit movie

what? - I mean, how can yo make an evening-filling movie of the Battle of Five Armies. leading up to the start of Fellowship? Of course, the culmination of the Killing of Smaug makes for movie-stuff. But the choice is... odd. I'd rather have seen it cut at Barrel-rider or in the dungeons of the forrest-elf king - and spread Smaug and the Battle of Five Armies over the second movie.

And in that sense, it's a big shame indeed that Jackson decided to cut the story of how the Hobbits get to the Prancing Pony; which is, of course, much closer to the adventures of Bilbo. On the other hand, it does give Del Toro the opportunity to elaborate a bit more on Hobbiton.

Still... what thrilling end could there be to Bilbo returning to Bag End? Besides, the return-journey is hardly to be called eventful, if you choose to stick to the 4 books involved, that is (and excluding the Sil and the UT).

Re: Any news about the Hobbit movie

There wasn't a "lot" different. Some things, but not that much. And turning book into film is not easy. You have to make a 600-700 page novel into a two hour movie. It's impossible to perfect, but PJ did it better than anyone I've ever seen, and probably better than anyone else could. Saying Peter Jackson did a pretty good job is like telling Michaelangelo is paintings are decent.

Re: Any news about the Hobbit movie

The thing is...as much as I LOVE The Lord Of The Rings books...and am honestly a bit obsessed with them...it wouldn't have filmed well in my opinion. There are a few minor things I didn't care for, but I easily got over it. Peter Jackson took a classic story, and turned it into and excellent movie.

Re: Any news about the Hobbit movie

Speaking to Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson, the mag got two great quotes. Del Toro says "We've decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur," which, since two movies are happening one way or the other, is a very good thing.

Jackson follows up. "We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie. The essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the [LOTR] trilogy."

Re: Any news about the Hobbit movie

^ I feel waaay behind on LoTR news, because I just bothered to find that out! Needless to say, I'm extremely glad.... the idea of a "bridge" movie between The Hobbit and LoTR would just have been strange. I think the schedule is still for a 2011 release of the first film?

I cannot wait to see this film! I'm like Lady_of_Shalott, I haven't been up to date on this and I believe two movies for The Hobbit sounds like a good idea.

    Right on! :)

This thread just made my day!

Checked out TOR site and read all the rumors. Glad they have Ian as Gandolf, awesome.

I really didn't think they were ever going to do the prequel, glad they finally decided to!

I'm just glad they never made that LotR movie with the Beatles as the four hobbits... I'm not making this up, it was in the works for a time.
