So ive been thinking of adding a bunch of animal based races in my book but i cant think of names for them

    Ideas
-Humanoid lion race(very prideful and heroic)
    -humanoid rat race(vicious and kleptomaniac)
    -humanoid wolf race(extremely good warriors)
    -humanoid monkey race(mischievous and curious)
-humanoid panther race(very dangerous and prefers the night)
-humanoid bird race(peaceful and music loving)

I like names that play on the etymology of the different races, either their animal type or their personality type, or both. There are a bunch of sites that help you find related words. I've used this one before for finding other language forms of words: behindthename.com

So for instance the bird race, you could start with "avian" in reference to birds, and/or "muse" in reference to art/music... and just mess with the combo of those words.

But note that some people don't like Earth-rooted names in fantasy, in which case you could just go from left field.

names are always the hardest part for me to come up with. I've gone through so many different name ideas for the race I'm working on now I can't quite remember what I called them at the beginning. I was given some helpful advice by one of my favorite authors on FB which is, just make a list of all the names you come up with, and pick the one that feels right to you. the biggest issue for me is naming them something other than what other authors have already.

i'd look at synonyms for their qualities, using variants of the spelling. for example (and i am not suggesting using these, just off the top of my head)
for the lion Bravura (meaning courage)
for the rat: Duplicitors (altered from duplicitous)
for the wolf: Adolphus (the exception to the rule, since Adolphus means noble wolf)
for the monkey: Nocua (altered from Nocuous)
for the panther: Adumbra (altered from Adumbrate which means to obscure)
for the bird: Placator (from Placattory)

-Ubaimasu(japanese for rob(for the rat race))
-Rapax(latin for aggressive(for the wolf race))
    -Simian(for the monkey race)
-Tenebris(latin for darkness(for the panther race))
-Avian or Eiríni(greek for peace)(for the bird race)<-------(p.s please pick which one you like)

for the lion race I would say go with Leonin, mostly because of Leo, and when I think lion, that pops into my mind.

for the bird race I like Eirini, not quite sure why but I think it's a cool looking word:D

and your ideas for the other 4 seem to work. also remember to add a plural version of each name, just for the situations where it's needed.

Concerning the names, i usually use a bunch of dictionaries and translate the qualities, charatceristics etc. of the thing i am giving the name. Then i mix up the words. I also deeply think about what does that thing remind me of and how it should sound (exotic, mysterious, dark,...someone else may hardly connect names with that but i do :D) It is hard though, i remember spending a whole evening to come up with a decent name for one of the lands in my world, finding uniqueness has always been a tough task, but satisfying at the end.. But still, i would not exchange my hobby and passion that is creating a fantasy world in which all the stories will take place for anything. Even though i may not be working on it all the time, i think about it every day.

I tend to go for names or words from languages around where the animals come from, so for the lion people I'd pick words from African languages, for the monkey and panther people one of the Indian dialects, and for the avians, probably something East-Asian (the Tengu being Japanese), etc.

Of course, I'd also say try to spice things up a bit, instead of pulling directly from one animal for each group, try to mix it up a bit.

I think coming up with names are fun, but species are hard to make names for. Try combing words that sound well or interesting together, you might get something.

Hey I looked at the replies and I am also writing a fantasy novel and would I be able to use some of these races?
