Everything you always wanted to discuss about the years 1933-1945 in Europe, do it here.

For example, if Hitler was a maniac.

(This thread appeared out of the need to get that subject out of another thread)

wow, T4M, way to go, Have you learned to build an argument and to defend it? Insulting others is not part of a debate.

Edit: Hitler was smart in the way that he did know how to use the masses and the emotions in Germany. But more than that... I don't think so...

I don't understand why people can't seperate different characteristics of an individual.
Hitler was a) A great military strategist, leader, charismatic and commander.
    b) An extremely evil person who killed and tortured millions, primarily jews, brought despair and agony to countless millions in the invaded countries, held a very militaristic and police controlled regime, and wanted to conquer the world in blood.

    See, not that hard.

Hitler took a nation broken by war and stamped on by the rest of Europe and turn it around into a major world dealer in only a few years - very very few people have ever managed to do that in so little time - especailly when everyone else around you didn't really want it to happen.
He then built an army in secret and went on to carve up a good portion of Europe and could have gone on to the world if he had been a bit more tactical (not attacking Russia) and had he rejected Japan's alliance (Japan hitting the US got the US against Hitler).

Hitler was Not a good tactician and he made many blunders in the tactics room - some officers were even put to death for disobyaing his rather odd orders. Also don't forget that the whole Natzi system came alive about Hitler and nearer the end he was not fully in charge and nor could he stop it growing. Not saying that he wanted to, but that others had power as well as him.

I am not defending their actions nor their crimes, but recognising that there was a power in the man to turn around a broken nation

Blackness I don't know what of his strategies was great at all.
Hitler took the direct command over the troops in the winter when the germans stood before Moscow. Under his leadership, Stalingrad happened.
All the other strikes against France and Poland were planned by his staff.
Charismatic he was, but that's not a trait he earns much reputation for. And a commander he was too, because he had the power to be one.

Stalingrad, Kursk...the man was an idiot blinded by delusions of grandeur. His success in the early years of the war was down to his enemies' inferior tactics, not his superior ones...

He brought Europe to it's knees.
And he came to power through his own actions.
You have to have brains for that, not just pretty eyes.

The German ww2 army was one of the greatest and well-disciplined ever, i know that you being german may make you ashamed of it or something (you shouldn't be ;)), but it is a fact, and had the war with russia started a few years later, chances are the world would be his.

It would not have taken a lot to turn Germany around again during those years.
Germany was a proud, but always separated nation and when 'we' lost the first world war (+ everyone saying that it was our fault, when parts of it were not) people were broken. That much is true.
They wanted revenge for Versailles and they wanted one big Germany again, as it had been under Karl the big idunnowhen.
But Hitler did not really turn Germany around. He came up when it would've gone up again anyways. You know how economic crisis' always draw a curve. Hitler came up when the curve had reached it lowest point. So he gathered support quickly and then fooled the people with propaganda. He built up illusions for them and made them think that they needed the things he could actually give them.

The one thing that was so special about Hitler, was his ability to talk. He talked his way to the top and the masses loved him.

Any the reason why he gained the full power, was because everyone underestimated him.
"In two months we'll have him (Hitler) in a corner, so that he'll squeak" - von Papen said that, when allowing Hitler to be "Reichkanzler". They thought that they could control him- and they couldn't

Hiter had 2 big advantage with his army

    1) its was more advanced than many others surrounding him as well as being well trained and loyal to the cause of the war

    2) he had a 1st rate group of generals and commanders in charge. They are the people who made most of the actual warplans. Hitler himself was a liabilty in the warroom - like to make poor choices that would lead to a waste of troops and resources and also like to lose the battle.

the early victories were mostly due to the fact that no one expected Hitler to attack - it was a surprise and as such caught many nations with their pants down

*and i agree that he know what to say...
but still he remains one of the best tacticians...

His tactics were elementally flawed, ano.

His blitzkrieg tactic did indeed work brilliantly (although, reportedly, it wasn't his). But when push came to shove, he wasn't able to alter his tactics, which trully signifies the ascended rulers.

I think the time has now come to reconsider national-socialism. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that it was bad; but it did arise from society in the first half of the 20'th century. It was a reaction, something a lot of people fel vunerable to. I have increasingly come of the opinion over the last few years that we have been blaming the 1930-1945 nazi supporters way too hard. And do we want to acknowledge how many of these have died in the bombing raids of the last 3 years of the War?

It also comes with a caveat, but it's a lesson we (Western Europe) have already forgotten. Germany is a pleasant exception (nazis and far-right movements do exsist, but are paryahs) - but pretty much all countries around it, already start to show signs of nazism again.

Fool us once, shame on you; fool us twice, shame on us

Hitler was a bad tactician, as OR just stated.
The quick victories were non of his doings. His doings were Stalingrad and everything that followed.

Edit: Tur, the right movement is growing here again as well. Maybe not just as fast as maybe in Austria, but it is there. Especially in the East, where there is no wealth and no chance and no education. We're working on it though.
It makes me sad, really, just sad, that others can not learn from the things that have happened in Germany.

They are the people who made most of the actual war plans. 0 they did not... they controled army... but Hitler made tactics for whole(of course for biggest battles too.. yes he left the smallest battle war aaln into generals hands )war..where and when attack.. but he was too self -confidence .. that was his biggest mistake..
