Hello I am new to the board, but I want to get active, but at the same time see if I can learn some things as I am an aspiring writer.

I was just wondering if there was any word through the grape vine if there was a group of fantasy writers that just like to trade stories or excerpts to do bits of critquing? I have looked a little and haven't found any. I know one of the hold ups is that work might be stolen, and that is why I am looking for a group that may be established. Thanks

*chuckles* that is what I am here for. To learn something new. I too am a writer. ;) I shamelessly look at the rp going on and, ahh, takes note ;)

I am a writer too. Most of my work is posted at deviantArt. I might be willing to trade stories for critiquing, but not exerts, kinda don't like to share what I am working on until its done lol.

At the moment I typically write short stories, have a few published in my uni's Anthology. I was working on a novel for young adults but ran into some complications and have to rewrite everything I had lol.

Oh what specifically do you write? I understand about the whole not letting people read things till its complete, I am just having a hard time finding anyone to read any of my stuff for critiquing, definitely not the easiest part of the writing.

If I may ask, what complications did you run into?

I write fantasy typically, mostly dark. I have written some fiction and even wrote a western. I also dabble in poetry now and then.

The complications were just stupidity on my part. I was transferring files from me desktop to my laptop, then got rid of my desktop. Turns out I transferred the wrong files so lost the several chapters I had written.

    edit:
Oh and the YA novel I was/am working on is more a modern fantasy.

Wow that really stinks. I am so afraid of losing my work that I have 3 flash drives, a back up on my external, a lap top and my desktop. I try to keep all of them up to date. It maybe a little over the top, but better safe then sorry.

    I write fantasy for sure.

Complications? Well, the writing itself is what holds me back. I sometimes have to go back to that same spot and tweak it until it sounds right in my ears, so to speak. It makes me insane! :p

Other than that, not so much! As I said, I love writing! Nothing like sitting down and just.. let go of yourself :)

Ya I have to do lots of tweaking. Since I started the book like 5 years ago, my writing has I hope improved, so I have to go back and rewrite whole sections.

My biggest problem is that I get distracted. Too much going on at one time, if I don't get like at least 4 hours to sit down and write then I really don't get anything accomplished except figuring out where I left off.

So my story is a bit cliche, and I am going to give a bit of the run down of first book. Let me know if its overly cliche.

    First book-
Boy found in woods, raised by elves, given to knight to be squired, learns way of knighthood, uses skill to help defend city from invasion of new race.

Good question, the boy is Man, the knights are Men. The Elves give him back at a certain age.

I also want to be a writer, but the sad thing is that I have to much stuff going on right now I have school for six hours, then every day after school I have robotics club(even on the weekends we stay till about Eight PM. Once I get home I am exausted from the work) due to the fact that we are going into the FIRST competition in late Februrary or early March. Plus I have a few big projects to do so I am kind of swamped till around March XD

Its actually a 4 piece book series, but the whole set of book ideas is now up to 17 books, and that is just scratching the surface of what I want to accomplish.

Yes I understand being busy, I work 8 hours a day and then have class at night most days of the week. Then the weekend I am trying to do home work and catch up on rest, its hard to get appropriate writing time in.

yeah writing is basically my way of getting away from my packed house of 8 people including me. There is yelling and screaming a lot these days XD. All of my freinds live across town so I can't really go there every day
