Hi guys, I re-enact and picked up a auxilary firemans axe from a junk shop, it looks suitably battererd but still pretty sturdy, reckon it'd be any good. My persona is late 1300's archer on chevauchee in France.

What shape is the axe head? I'm making a diamonf section one handed sword for my 14th/15thC archer kit.

Did the French have many archers? I always thought they prefered crossbowmen?

No I'd be English on chevauchee, the top of the axe is right angled, drops about eight inches and curves back up to the handle, the spike on the back is an extention of the right angle at the top and the curve at the bottom and extends about six inches out the back. I think the french had archers but they were a kind of militia and weren't very numerous, they also employed Genoese mercenarys who were awesome crossbow men but were poorly used at Crecy, don't shoot crossbows in the rain!

My limited understanding is that archers were expected to provide their own melee weapons, so if the axe doesn't look too out of period or if it looks like a farming tool converted into a weapon, it might be okay.

Cool, thanks for your input, thats what I figured, will be aquiring a sword soon so the axe will take a back seat, although you can never have enough weapons!
