I had wondered the same thing. I thought it was a discussion about the different types of magic in fantasy but the OP (IMO) was giving us a lot of detail without a lot of context.

Some magic in fantasy that comes to mind...

LOTR: Whereas LOTR was not the first epic fantasy I came across, I was surprised at the lack of pomp & circumstance associated with magic. Gifted practitioners control and manipulate raw forces. Though there are magical artifacts like the palantir and, oh yeah, this troublesome One Ring.

D&D: This is where I cut my teeth on fantasy and the magic is more complex than in LOTR. It is also more monetized where costs are specific in terms of spell components, conjuration ritual and available spell resources (often described as mana these days). D&D also gives us groups that access and control magic differently (wizards, sorcerers and warlocks). Many 'monsters' are also very proficient with magic like dragons and beholders. Plus a plethora of artifacts as well, like the Dragon Orb.

S&S: My take away from the pulp sword & sorcery days is that sorcery is 95% evil and that swords are needed to overcome it. Magic implementation and execution not unlike that of Tolkien.

Fairy Tale: Two types of magic appear to prevail. One is where gifted people can use magic effortlessly like an Elsa in Frozen. The other is more common and is potion based, like a magically poisoned apple or a love potion or a witch's cauldron (because they aren't making supper in it). The television series Once Upon A Time handled these adroitly and also added the cost of magic as magic always comes with a cost. And usually a very troublesome one which would deter it's casual use.
