Maybe we should make a poll about Star Wars being Fantasy or Sci-Fi.

It's both. I contains many aspects that automatically qualify a work of fiction for both fantasy and sci-fi, so why does it need to be only one or the other?

    Edit: BACK ON TOPIC

I think I prefer LotR, because as epic as Star Wars' plot was, it still can't compare to LotR. I also like the setting in LotR alot more.

We already had a thread debating SW was sci-fi or fantasy, but I just saw a lot of posts like Foin's actually who label it sci-fi just because they can't see besides the technology and futuristic setting.

    I agree.It can't be compared to LOTR.

And Anakin...we can see beyond and besides the technology and futuristic settings, but it's still sci-fi.

If Frodo had a lightsaber,Aragorn was a lone ranger gangster who fell in love with the beautiful space princess and Gandalf was a Jedi mentor...and Frodo had to carry the One Ring into the mouth of the Death Star(a.k.a. Mount of Doom)...then.....sci-fi.

I can,but you must learn how to categorize something as Fantasy and something else as
    Sci-Fi.

Fruits and vegetables. They look so similar but they are not the same.

So it's about how the movie looks... Not what it is about. Sure Foin, if you don't care about the content, then that's fine with me. I on the other hand I see the same story which you described, so if you add technology to a story that doesn't change the label on it. That's the difference. I think you rather have to learn what a story is made of before you put a label on it. Anyway it's pointless to continue, cause I know how stubborn you can be. Better yet I know how stubborn I can be lol.

Ok just tell me,what is Avatar?

I know what you would say. That it's a similar story to Pocahontas. What do we have though in Avatar?Another planet,an alien race, advanced technology etc. etc.

What is Avatar?A sci-fi movie. What is the theme of Avatar?Love and war.

    What is Avatar?A sci-fi movie.

    What is Avatar?A sci-fi movie.

Oh yes you don't like Avatar and neither does Tori but that's not the point.

What is the whole Mos Eisley Cantina scene in Star Wars?A typical Western saloon scene.

What is Luke and Princess Leia? The typical rescue the princess fantasy theme.

    What is Obi-Wan Kenobi?The typical wizard-mentor guy.

What is Jabba the Hut?The typical mobster movie villain.

What makes all these things different? The technology, the settings, the races and the dialogues.

What makes the Star Wars movies Sci-Fi movies? The technology, the settings, the races and the dialogues.

If it was all medieval it would be a fairy-tale.If it was all in the 1880s Wild West they would be Western movies.

Well actually yes, Avatar is based heavily on mythology too. You can see that Cameron took a similar route as George Lucas delving deep into mythological themes you hear Joseph Cambel described in the hero with a thousand faces. And you said it yourself Avatar is basically Pochahontas plus technology. Again you're not looking at the story.

You described all these settings and types of characters, but all these elements combined do not change the core of the story. And that is fantasy.

p.s. We have Avatar on Blu-Ray. You're exaggerating our words. We found it disappointing for a movie made by James Cameron but it's still good.

Did you say fantasy, why almost the whole story of the first film resolves around that... What does that mean then...

Ok I'm talking in english here.

I said that Avatar has a story similar to Pocahontas but what else do we have in Avatar?
Another planet,an alien race, technology, futuristic weapons and lots of science.
So what does that make this movie?A sci-fi movie.

    What is Avatar?A sci-fi movie.

    and

That means that there is a reason why it is called "SCIENCE FICTION" and not just "FICTION" or "FANTASY".

Oh on a side note, you can easily hit on a girl by talking about LOTR,you can't hit on too many girls by using Star Wars as a subject...and don't smile that wasn't a compliment :p

Seriously, you can approach a girl far easier by talking about The Lord of the Rings or generally Tolkien's work but you can't just go to a girl and star talking to her about Star Wars. She'll think that you're either too childish or a geek!:p

LOTR can get you a date.Star Wars can make your palm hurt every night.

Like I said... Pointless. I think our view differs how you classify any kind of media so let's leave it there....
Lol, I think it goes by the same. You'll have girls who will think you're a LOTR geek or a SW geek. Pretty much the same. I'm a SW geek and I married a movie geek. (Oh yes believe it or not Tori doesn't want to be called a SW fan as she despises most SW fans ranting about the prequels or the special editions) . So I would say the chances are certainly equal. And now we're talking whether LOTR or SW can get you a date? Seriously is TFF turning into a dating service? lol

LOTRs, Star Wars. Star Trek etc, it's all in the beloved Land of Geekdom, plenty of singletons on every front lol Just some are more fortunate than others.

And I say again, does it REALLY matter whether some consider SW sci-fi, fantasy etc? I said my piece, and everyone can say their own. And I understand everyone's perception, and maybe that's the cool thing about SW, you can't easily classify it as one thing, there's multiple.
