New edition of the book at Amazon. Looks extremely nice to me.

    "Book Description
The Fellowship of the Ring, part one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, fist reached these shores on October 21, 1954, arriving, as C. S. Lewis proclaimed, "like lightning from a clear sky." Fifty years and nearly one hundred million American readers later comes a beautiful new one-volume collector’s edition befitting the stature of this crown jewel of our list. With a text fully corrected under the supervision of Christopher Tolkien to meet the author’s exacting wishes, two large-format fold-out maps, a ribbon placemarker, gilded page edges, a color insert depicting Tolkien's own paintings of the Book of Mazarbul and exceptionally elegant and sturdy overall packaging housed within an attractive slipcase, this edition is the finest we’ve ever produced."

    looks great.

I might buy it in the future.

Right now, however, I'll stick with my paperback boxed set.

Wow that looks really nice. But it's one of those books that almost looks too nice to read. :D Knowing me I'd spill something on it... I'll probably just have to stick with my well worn hardcovers, much as I'd like to have it.

Lovely looking book. But I think I'll stick with my dog-eared paperbacks. I'd be afraid to touch something that nice.

I have an illustrated copy of them, Im afraid to touch them. I just look through them at the artwork. This will be more of a "show copy" than anything. I'll stick to my duct-taped paperbacks for reading.

Hey guys I wanted to let you know that this is the previous red leather backed edition with a different binding and gold leaf pages. I just wanted everybody to realize that this isnt truly a new edition. The Alan Lee Illustrated version is much better in my opinion.

Ai na vedui! Mine just came in the mail a few days ago... sorry, no digital camera.
Contrary to the picture posted, it is black. The hard cover has an interesting leathery feel- almost fuzzy like suede. On the front cover, you can see the design half obscured in the picture posted- it is stamped with two colors of foil. The back cover has JRRT's signature in foil. The page edges are beautifully gilded, almost enough to see your own reflection!
Inside the front cover is Tolkien's map of Middle-earth- I found a picture online here. Inside the back cover is Tolkien's map of Gondor- picture here.
The title pages are printed in black and red ink, with the main body of the book printed in black, of course. Directly after the chapter A Journey in the Dark, right before The Bridge of Khazad-dûm are glossy pages featuring 3 leaves from the Book of Mazarbul. This is also where the ribbon marker is located when you first open the book.
Certainly not my "reading copy". But WOW anyways.

By the way... A small "Note on the 50th Anniversary Edition" mentions, "we are preparing a volume of annotations to The Lord of the Rings for publication in 2005.
