Sky, I do agree that Star Trek attempts to make the technology that they employ more plausible through extrapolation on and reference to current technologies, but the degree of extrapolation in some cases is such a big stretch it becomes fantasy in itself don't you think? You surely don't think that all of the fantastic ideas of Roddenberry & pals obey the laws of physics as we know them?!

It is the detail that the writers go into to try and make these ideas seem more plausible that, I think, is the most amazing thing.

I just want to state for the record that I am not knocking Star Wars (love the series), I'm just pointing out that it doesn't even attempt to claim basis in actual science. I just want to make that clear because I don't want anyone jumping on me for knocking it.

Realistically, there are things that are a stretch in Star Trek too. The writers do make a pretty good attempt to explain things, but just enough to make it believable.

Unfortunately, as a sword fanatic that would love to see promise of an actual lightsaber, I have seen no plausible basis in science to see it happen. I've seen some interesting "explanations", such as the one posted, but you may as well say that the beam is confined by "Keebler Magic", because it's just as likely to be true.

So THAT'S how they did it. I don't know what George Lucas has on those elves that would distract them from their cookies, but at least now we know who to go to if we want our own working lightsaber! :D

There're quite a few more places that make custom Star Wars lightsabers. I have a Qui-Gon lightsaber, but the place that makes them's closed its doors.

Actually that place only make the hilt, but it can fit a 9V battery and a EL blade driver inside, with a removeable blade.

The hilt itself is machined aluminium. Too bad though 'coz the wiring inside is broken now, haven't got time to fix it yet.

Anyhow, here's two pics of the lightsaber when it was working:

The Master Replicas FX sabers (which we sell) are actually quite durable. You can bang them together and they'll not break, but you need to use a little common sense. Do not swing as hard as you can, mock fight only.

If you go out at night with a couple friends too its loads of fun and it looks amazing. At night they look real for all anyone can tell.

no...the original saber of Vader was actually a flashgun, it wasn't made of wood, but real metal, I've got the signature edition of it which is a real replica of the prop used during the making of the film

and so was Luke's in ANH. Vader's was a heiland flashgun if i remember right, and Luke's was a graflex.

btw, the Parksabers and the sabers from BuyStarWarsStuff.com are the same sabers.

Here are some pics of the lightsaber I built for my son. This one doesn't light up, however I am working on one that will.

cool, I am awaiting the lightsaber of Anakin ep III now, from Master Replicas. It looks very different from the one of Luke. It has details from his ep II saber, it is longer than the one from Luke (which normally is the same).

probably because on screen they would look to much like a red lightsaber...which is only used for the sith....however...i believe in the expanded universe i've heard of a pink one....but i'm not positive....
