Re: Where do we all go- when we die?

So, Kakashi, it's impossible to say the meaning of life if there's nothing after, and impossible to say if there isn't? Then how is the meaning of life relevant?

Sorry I'm a bit slow on the uptake. I'm not used to discussing irrational viewpoints so I have trouble following the premises sometimes.

Re: Where do we all go- when we die?

    the meaning of life
    what comes after death

two questions that appear to have bugged humanity since we became "smart". Why am I here and where am I going - one looks to a past before we were and the other looks to a future where we are not - at least on this plan of existance. Notice that "where am I now" is missing- it is the only question that we can answer, the other two we cannot answer at all. We can guess, but those guesses are like a deaf man's guess at what sound sounds like.
Sometimes I wonder if cats and dogs wonder these questions, or if it is only humanity that cannot understand their place today and then you have to look deeper and see that the soicieties that dwell upon these questions tend to be those most out of phase with the environment around them, most at conflict with it. In the end is where we come from and where we aim for both the same place in the end - a balance with the environment around us?

now can someone please read that and tell me if it makes any sense at all

If I've offended you it's common courtesy to at least tell me how.

basically what I got out of this was that since Kakashi had a different opinion than you, you deemed it irrational.

Re: Where do we all go- when we die?

No I didn't. I said that this is an irrational topic for discussion; apart from the null hypothesis there are no rational conclusions to be made. I was highlighting the fact that I am not used to such discussions and as such might be a bit slower keeping up than the average person is. I didn't say anything about kakashi's opinion.

Re: Where do we all go- when we die?

Upon reflection I can see how my meaning may have become confused, especially since the comment was immediately preceded by a question for Kakashi. Sorry about that, Kakashi. I was using "irrational" as a factual description of the question, not as a statement about a particular opinion over another.

Isn't the meaning of life simple? To survive and reproduce...that's the circle of life...that is the meaning of life...simple as that! And I'm sorry if you religious guys think that's too low for 'the meaning of life'... But that is just what it is... you die... you rot... nothing higher... enjoy life... and do not waste your time puzzling what comes after... That is my advice...

Anakin, I disagree with your "meaning". I do not intend to reproduce, but my life is perfectly meaningful. The fact that everybody alive today is the descendant of those who survived and reproduced does not make it a purpose of existence.

I agree with Anakin, from a biological point of view. As in, nature in its totality, not us as individuals, or you specifically.

I use the "weed on a rock" analogy for my personal beliefs. Out in the middle of the Aussie nowhere, perched on a barren rock, you can see one plant growing out of the cracks. What good will it ever do there? What joy can it ever look forward to? Is that plant happy?

All I know is, it wants to live. It wants to survive, and it wants to reproduce. The aim of life imho is to continue living. To ensure the next generation survives and thrives.

That's just my opinion, coming from a practical atheist who believes in evolution :D

Well you disagree... And I understand... But still my meaning stands in what you say... If you don't intend to reproduce in life... Then survive;)

well I assumed you "believe in" evolution -- presumably you "believe in" gravity as well but that doesn't mean that the purpose of life is to fall down.

    Exactly.
I see your purpose as pretty meaningless Anakin, survival and reproduction doesn't lead anywhere, however, we were given sentience and minds by evolution, and i say we should at least try to find out why and how we came to exist, if nothing else.
In this i find meaning, that i will be trying to find answers till the day i die.

To find out where we come from is not the meaning of life... It is a purpose you can find interest in... It depends from person to person... I mean don't many religious people already know where they come from? They are so sure they come from God and that God created the universe so that purpose has been fulfilled... At least for them... No? The fact there is no higher cause to the meaning of life doesn't mean it isn't so. And CP... I don't really understand what you are trying to say about evolution and gravity... Yes I believe in both, but what does that have to do with the meaning of life... Did I ever say that both were connected to the meaning of life? As I said... the meaning of our lives is mainly to survive and the continuation of our species. It doesn't mean it isn't less special. The question is why does there have to be a greater cause? Is it to make ourselves to feel more special?

Isn't one of the purposes or at least pursuits of a person in life happiness?
