I agree with you that Shotokan from what I had studied was pretty much a joke. I went through 5 belts in merely 2 years, the grading was poor and many of the people who passed sucked quite badly. Poor form and weak stances were passed.

I do think Karate is a good style though, and have wanted to learn from a master from Okinawa. Their Karate style is recognised as being highly proficient.

We learnt some knife defense drills last night, again, simple moves, nothing complex. Only to be used when you think you're in danger. If it's just about money, hand it over and stay alive.

Slap knife away as hard and quick as you can, groin kick, run.

Keep in mind this is the level 1 basic stuff. There's a lot more advanced brutal stuff out there, but not for me for a long time yet :)

Only if you succeed. Failure leads to haemorrhage.

Yep, only good if it works. If I think someone if just after my wallet, they can have it. I'm about to become a father, I don't need to be a dead hero.

however if I think they are trying to hurt me, well, I'll give it my best shot. Right in their balls :D

Were the disarming victims cooperating or were they fighting back? If they were fighting back, now hard were they fighting?

Yeah one of the things our instructor does when we do rubber knife drills, is to make the attacked react accordingly. So they threaten you, you smash their hand away and go for a groin kick or a punch etc, but the attacked also has to come back for a second swing, like a real attacker would. And if you don't do it properly, you get sliced, stabbed etc. Don't lena back far enough? You get your throat cut on the backswing.

Makes it much more realistic, which is the whole point.

I'm guessing they'd teach those more ptentially lethal moves in advanced classes, to students who've proven not to be psychos :)

I know that if I got into a real fight, the throat, eyes and balls would be major targets I'd be aiming for.

I saw a youtube demonstration of a gun-disarm and it all looked very practical and useful in a modern day situation.
