    well then again the entire samurai tradition was eventually declaired illegal. also on the topic of what was used where, originally the katana was largely unused in favor of the bow and naginata on a horse combination, it was not until the possession of the sword was declaired illegal that it became the primary weapon of the samurai. however the indoor comabt thing was yes primarily wakazashi, the tanto usually being used by samurai for seppuku

    Actually paul chen makes some pretty good swords the practical katana is pretty good for under $200 bucks it is made with a hrc60 edge and a hrc40 back ive tryed it its sharp.

    You aren't going to get a half-decent real katana for any less than 1k USD, much less 100 CAD. A good katana would be clay-tempered, have a high-carbon skin and low carbon core and probably be made with the san mai steel folding technique. James Williams probably sells the cheapest good katana you're going to find at bugei.com.

    In light of the OP's actual budget and aim, the $200 Paul Chen is more realistic than suggesting a $1000+ item.

    If you are interested of katana you can get one for a few bucks but it has the only one purpose: to put it on your wall.

    If you want to make some swordfight with your katana you will have to invest more money.

    I can recommend Marto Katanas or Paul Chen.
