Hey, I've just started 'A Game of Thrones' and it's very different, with switching between all of the people. I'm not really sure if I 'get' the book yet. So far it seems not to have a story line, but I'm sure it will come in time...hopefully...
    If you post...NO SPOILERS!

Not sure, I find ASOIAF to be a lot more gritty and adult than the books you've mentioned. Alot more violence, and alot more swearing and sexual reference. I guess it depends, but its probably best to read it when your 15+, though LDH is only 14 and she definently loves it :D

Totally agree with Elan on the grit of the series. If you can sit down and deal with the fact that this is an adult series than you'll be fine. And unlike most of the other stuff you mentioned you'll get more from ASOIAF every time you read it.

Ok, I'm going to have to play the old folk card here and totally agree with Elan and K'shar. I'm thinking 15+ too it deals with a lot of stuff you would never find in a C. S. Lewis book or J. R. R. Tolkien book.

I find it totally different than most other fantasy work in a good way.

    1. It has the most intricate political plots I've found. It has a really good feudalism system not seen as much in other books.
    2. Its more adult. I'm an adult, I want to read about adults doing adult things. I can see a kid not liking it as much though, but for us adults its a good read.
    3. The violence and death makes it seem more real. The bad guys don't all wear black hats, and when people fight they can die, the heros don't always make it home.

    My reasons for worshipping aSoIaF:

    1) The characters are a mixture of good and evil, and you find yourself sympathizing with "bad" characters or disliking "good" characters. They're fully fleshed-out, and they seem like real people rather than heroes, villains, etc.
    2) After I turned 12, I decided that I didn't like fairy-tale type stories, and moved onto adult series. It's great because it's very realistic; plenty of people die, just like in real life. Although it's not precisely advisable to read the series when you're 15 or younger (although I obviously broke this rule), sex, violence, swearing, etc. are all a part of adult life, and therefore also realistic.
    3) As CB Swords said, it has a very intricate plot, and unlike most fantasy books, doesn't involve the hero saving the world.
    4) Magic doesn't save the day for everyone. It always seems to work out in other books that the hero's magic is what saves everyone.
    5) There's a lot of variety to the characters, plot, events, etc.

But this series isn't an easy read; I've been reading aSoIaF for almost a year now, and there's still things that I'm missing. On the other hand, that's the sixth reason why I love it - it has so many twists to everything, and lots of mysteries to puzzle out.

I think that you'll enjoy the series and end up worshipping it. :p :D

Unless of course you're half retarded and then we'll just name you Doosh Baggins. (Yes I realize it's spelt douche but I figured for a name it should be a little different)

I also realize I'm being an ass. but you know it's Christmas, If I don't vent some of my pent up aggression somewhere I might explode from all the holy joly crap spewing out of my mouth. Merry F**king Christmas everyone

I just finished 'A Game of Thrones' and starting 'A Clash of Kings' I turned 14 In september and I think that it is awesome. One thing I like about it, is that it is not some fariy tale where the hero wins all the time and the bad guys never win (much like Sansa's thinking). If Martin wrote Harry Potter it would be like "Well we don't need this guy, lets see...Harry gets stabbed multiple times...Ya, thats good"

OH that would be so sweet. Harry Potter being stabbed multiple times by Sandor Clegane. I can picture it now. It's almost orgasmic. I hate Harry Potter

K I realize that that sounds really really wrong and that you might want to call the cops on me for it but I stand behind my original statement. :devilspin

Done with 'A Clash of Kings'. It just gets better and better. I'm on page 200 of 'A Storm of Swords' and its my favorite so far, the books are getting more fantasy like now. In the first book I was'nt sure why this was a fantasy series but now I know.
PS: Theon Greyjoy scared the Sh** out of me with Bran.

You're getting there at least. Do you have a favorite character yet, Soul?
As far as the age thing, I was 17 when I started (almost 20 now). It all depends on the maturity level.
