Tolkien didn't forge any sort of blueprint whatsoever, he dug one up that most other scholars considered archaic and trivial, modernised it and made it popular.

To be honest fantasy has existed in legends and myths for a very, very long time.

To say that Tolkien created fantasy is ridiculous. It'd be a lot more accurate to say that Tolkien created fantasy as a recognized genre in publishing.

    I echo your feelings.

But yes, Tolkien did not create Fantasy. Merely shaped it and provided a good model that many others have used to create their own works.

Sorry, but yes he did. Prior to LotR fantastic fiction existed only in the form of mythology and fairy tales aimed at children. As a genre of popular literature, it was non-existent. My statement stands.
Indeed. Who made such a claim?

Not even close. Tolkien's world, his works, everything, are FAR more extensive than GRRM.

I'll agree that Tolkien's world was more extensive and in depth and all that. But, GRRM's characters and plot are much better, so who wins in the long run? :p

This is getting about as ridiculous as the "WHO IS MORE POWERFUL LEGOLAS OR DRIZZT" thread.

Seriously, for all that it's the "same" genre, Tolkien and Martin wrote in different subgenres, in different times, aimed at different audiences, different emphasis, etc.

Also Steiv please stop trying to troll the rabid fans that exist deep down in every one of the ASoIaF board posters here. :(

Is Tolkien that one guy who wrote about hobbits or something silly?

Getting the asoiaf people riled up is much funnery.

    Jorick: No problem :p

Kakashi: He's the dude who doesn't look like he commits half the rapes and dodgy things he writes in his books with such detail and familiarity.

What a coruscating rebuttal of my statement. Give yourself a medal. Or, better yet, invest your fanboyism in authors who actually deserve it.
