Not a pleasant thought ~ thousands of martyrs, oil rationing/price hikes(?) Mind you with the US advantage in technology they could take out most military infrastructure from a distance with cruise missiles or a bit of B52 carpet bombing.

Lets face it Iran (pop c70m) at best gave as good as they got against Iraq (pop c30m) in the Iran-Iraq wars and Iraq's offensive capability didn't last long against the US led coalition. I doubt Iran's would fare much better. If the US could gain and hold the oil fields and destroy the nuclear capability... the mountainous areas I suppose would be irrelevant.

Still wouldn't be easy, cheap or a final solution

Edit: Last estimates put Iran's military spending at $6bn pa which is similar to Sweden and Singapore (neither exactly known for their military posturing) and approx 1/90th of the US.

Actually Iran has a mixture of Soviet,British,American,Chinese,North Korean and Iranian weapons(ranging from tanks, air fighters, missiles and small portable weapons).Back in the 80's they were attacked by Iraq that had support from USA,the Soviet Union and Europe, had a state of the art(back then)Soviet equipment and Iran's army was in a state of decay due to the Iranian revolution. They cought the Iranians under surprise and still they managed to turn the war on their favor until Saddam used chemical weapons and the front was kind of stabilized.

Now the most logical guess like Elladan said is that the U.S. could probably try to bomb Iran with missiles from far away, but here's the thing: The Iranians have bought anti-missile systems from Russia and other countries.Remember the trouble Hizbollah caused to the Israeli Army during the 2006 war? They were supposed to be trained and supplied by the Iranians. So imagine a huge army of such soldiers in Iran. One more thing is that if USA invaded Iran even if they crashed the Iranian army in the end,the guerilla warfare would be terrible because it would be much worse than that of Iraq's because most of the Iranians have anti-american feelings, the country is much bigger than Iraq and the terrain is mountainous. If they can't manage Afghanistan, can they manage Iran?I don't know.

But it would probably cause problems in the economy of the country and perhaps the entire world due to all that oil stuff.

I think US public opinion would be a greater obstacle than Iran's armed forces

*hopes this never comes to pass*
