Guess this is a pretty old thread, but I hope you enjoy GoT ;) I can't guarantee that you'd enjoy it, because honestly, the series is completely different from HP/LotR/Discworld. The former are incredibly biased good vs. evil books (also with accompanying messages of racism, sexism, classism, etc. but that's another rant for another day); Discworld's what I consider to be the Literature with a capital L of fantasy.

I will say, however, that GRRM is an excellent writer, especially in the fantasy genre because 90% of fantasy authors apparently don't know how to string together a sentence properly. So the quality of his prose is a plus for me, but honestly, what draws me in (and most others, I expect) is the gift he has for characterization. So basically you should update this thread with your opinions and views of the characters. ^____^

I just started A Game of Thrones—which my sister got me to agree to by accepting a copy of The Black Company—and was able to meet Mr. Martin last Sunday at a signing in Pasadena. My sister embarrassed our whole group by gushing all over him like a groupie meeting a rock star, but I have to admit that after meeting him, I'm even more excited to read the books.

Haha! I thought looking like a groupie meeting a rock star was how one should act when meeting Legenday Martin? I would, if I ever got the chance to meet him. Keep on reading the books and you will realise that you should have done so too.

I just started GoT myself in November or something, and finished CoK the other day. Fantastic books (but why do all fantasy writers insist on writing bricks?!). I'll try not to rush the books, though, seeing as they aren't finished. I've started Dragonlance now, but my mind is still in the Ice and Fire world.

Irritating to shove into a school bag, but you wish they were longer when you turn the last page :(

Get a Kindle and the brick problem goes away :)

Besides you think fantasy writers are bad try scifi - 1200 page paperbacks are dangerous to read (spine killingly so ;))

    Hehe, I'm a bit old-fashioned. I prefer a physical book. ;)
