What are the pros and cons of ASoIAF? I just don't want to spend money on books that I'm not gonna like >_>... to give you an idea of what I DO like..

    Lord of the Rings
    Harry Potter
    Discworld

Mainly fantasy stuff (which is what this series seems like).

    Pros: It's pretty much awesome.
    Awesome writing style.
Awesome story setting (medieval + fantasy, kinda like Lotr)
Awesome characters, seriously, haven't yet found a book where characters are so deep
    Awesome story line thus far

Cons: It doesn't matter which character you really like - it'll probably just end up dead anyways.
    They're a greeeeaaaat many books

Conclusion: Read it if you can handle losing awesome characters and if you're ready to dive deeeep into another fantasy world.
Don't read it if you don't like the above :D

The thing about characters dying off really concerns me... I get emotionally attached easily too book and film characters -.-

    Are they really long?

    the books? yeah.
The characters deaths? Sometimes very long as well. :D

I get emotionally attached as well. That's why I threw the book against the wall and promised to never pick it up again. 5 minutes later I was back reading it. ^^

    Pros:
Strong, rounded characters. Many of the characters will surprise you convincingly.
Powerfully evocative world, very Medieval in some details.
Martin has a much better grasp of Medieval politics than other fantasy writers.
    Superb writing style.

    Cons:
Characters you care for will die, and die unpleasantly.
Gore. If you have a sensitive stomach, you might want to avoid it.
Swearing, graphic sex, rape, incest, child abuse. These bother some people, not others.

The series stands at four books, with three more coming. Book five is almost done, but by the time it comes out it'll be six years at least between books. I doubt the series will be done before 2020, and I think that's optimistic. I've been wrong before, but this looks like a marathon wait. And I'm not betting the series will be finished in seven volumes.

    Addendum:

I haven't read Discworld, but LotR and Harry Potter share an extremely strong sense of good vs. evil. Don't expect much of that in A Song of Ice and Fire.

I'll also add that ASOIAF has a more gritty real feeling to it than many other high fantasy stories - magic is very much muted in the world (but it is there and is growing in power) and the author also has a keen interest and understanding of the time period historically. So it gains a level of accuracy in how it feels.

Further the characters are more realistic feeling overall than in many tales and - whilst there are some very polar good/bad guys - overall you've got a story that has far more grey and human characters rather than scores of die hard good vs bad.

About the only crit the series has is that its not finished ;)

They're no longer than Harry Potter, and trust me...once you start reading you'll wish they were even longer.

Everyone has laid out some very good pros and cons, so I won't repeat them. But I will say that if you don't read it, you're missing out on a great series. I guarantee you'll love the books.

I've little to add beyond what the others have said. I enjoyed all the books you mentioned in the OP, but IMO ASOIAF is better than all of them.

well from what all of you have said, they sound fantastic. I might have to buy myself a Christmas present this year. I definitely plan on reading them now... it's just a matter of when.

Also, I'd really love to watch the TV show based off the books... how do you guys feel about the show?

The show looks good so far. But I guess I'll never get to see it, because the books are not popular over here so the TV series won't be shown or translated or whatever. -.-

You can find it online, I'm sure. If I watch it, that's probably how it will be. Unless I can talk my bf who has HBO into watching it as well.

As all have mentioned, they are awesome.
Probably the grittiest fantasy series written thus far!! Mirrors the seedy side of reality a tad too close for some, but I like it. Great if you like "grey" characters, rather than the the traditional heroes and villians.
I am re reading it at the moment. Dont know why seeing as I will have to wait another 20 years for another book to be written!! :p, which is the only con I see.
Looking forward to the series, even though I worry about casting a bit!

Sometimes when discusstion ASoIaF I feel constrained to defend the European Middle Ages. This is such a time.

When reading, remember that the series is inspired largely by the Wars of the Roses - one of the low points in European history - and that Martin takes a somewhat dystopian view of events that were bad enough that they didn't need emphasis.

I enjoyed this series, sad that all the books aren't finished. I can see that a lot of us are frustrated about this. I'd recomend that you read it.
