i'm thinking of introducing our 4 1/2 year old to the first Star Wars movie (ie the 4th in the series) this upcoming Easter weekend. Anyone want to venture an opinion as to whether it's too soon? i wasn't planning to til he was 6 or 7 but some friends who are usually pretty protective of their children said 'go for it'. I didn't take much convincing but now i'm having doubts.

I think you can show all Star Wars films to her, it's PG rated. Except for maybe Episode III, which has a few disturbing scenes, hence why it's the only Star Wars film which is rated PG-13.

I watched them at a young age myself, I did enjoy them but I didn't really understand what was happening. They will grow to understand and appreciate it with time.

Do NOT let them watch the Indiana Jones films haha. My Dad let me watch all of them when I was 6 or 7 and Temple of Doom at that age scarred me for life.

Both my kids have been watching them for the past year or so off and on and they're almost 6 and 10 now. Neither of them seemed particularly disturbed by them either and they both enjoyed them.

My earliest memory of Empire Strikes Back would be aged 5-6. I freaking loved it. I reckon the original trilogy is entirely okay for little kids, but maybe not the prequels. A) kids might like Jar Jar Binks and then you'd have to disown them, and B) Anakin's turn to the dark side and having his limbs chopped off and catching on fire MIGHT be a tad much for some. I know my 4yo daughter is a complete puss so I'm just going to wait a while. I enjoy sleeping and not soothing nightmares :D

thanks guys. we watched 4, 5 & 6 - he loved them. probably didn't get it all but he followed a reasonable amount and he seemed totally captivated throughout and by no means disturbed except when obi wan died. luckily we've introduced him to the idea of reincarnation so he got over it.

And I'm with you Mububban. I have no intention of going down the track of the prequels mostly because I'm not willing to subject myself to Jar Jar Binks again =D
