I was practicing one day with my knock off ranger sword, I had decided to try that sword throwing thing the Black Knight in monty python does, and after a couple succesful throws against a tree I decided to try one from a little farther away. Well I missed the tree, all except for one quillion, which completly broke off. Word of caution don't throw your swords at trees.

There's always the issue of balance. But maybe it's worth it when you consider the possibility of it saving your life if you're hit.

Maybe it would be a good idea to practice with something heavier than a sword- just like a batter swings around 2 or 3 bats right before he steps up to the plate.
Does anyone know how olympic fencers practice? Or do they need an opponent to practice with?

How do you think that would help you? Probably you need mostly to practice a few effective combos many many times til you can do them in your sleep.

On the other hand, I've been experimenting with bracket training for my longsword studies, to increase speed. I start by doing a couple of basic blows in air, about 10 times each, just to warm up. For Fiore that would be fendente both right and left.

Then I pick up a breaker bar, basically a big 10-pound crowbar, four feet long, with gloves on. I start with slow blows so I can stop the sword at the end of the cut without hitting the ground. After about 10 of those, I then do about 10 going full force into the ground, so I exercise getting the inertia of the thing off my shoulder and into the cut.

Then I cool down with 10 more with my waster...

Olympic fencing is so different than anything here that it's really a different sport.

I usually practise Iaido kata and dummy practise. I find Orkins technique quite interesting and will give it a try sometime.
