Has anybody read the His Dark Materials books by Philip Pullman? It's some great stuff... not just another Tolkien re-write. The books follow the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, a girl from a parallel universe similar, yet different from our own. It's Paradise Lost retold, with a thought-provoking spin on religion and authority. New Line is working on a film version that's expected to come out in 2005 (more about that on http://www.darkmaterials.net ), and is being adapted by Tom Stoppard (Empire of the Sun, Shakespeare in Love, Enigma). They haven't chosen a director or cast yet. Even if you don't agree with the finer points Pullman makes, the books are a great story, and I highly recommend them if you haven't read them!

This should be in the general book area.

Have read them - thought that they were brilliant - BUT there are books that have captured me more than these.
