They've had an item number for it since last Spring -- but it seems to have been stalled since they've never opened it up for ordering for us.

In regards to this sword Kit Rae gave the following information today on another site:

"It is still in the works and the handle will likely be changed to fiberglass resin, like the Elf helm and shield. Our test of a metal handle is not going to be workable. The only way to make the handle match the one in the film is to make it like the prop. The blade will be steel, but this is going to be a prop replica now. Nothing is confirmed as of yet and there is no release date."

    thanks deepwood. :)

So, this will be a replica in the true sense of the word.

What I am wondering is why they can't make the handle out of leather like in the movies.

    espense, perhaps?

I was right last year when I blamed the delay on the handle.

If the sword turns out top notch, kick ***, high quality, then maybe it will be worth the wait.

Heh... I'd always assumed the Elven Warrior Sword's hilt was covered in wood, but now that I think about it that would be hugely impractical for so large a piece; leather around a metal hilt makes more sense.

Interesting that now we'll be getting both sword, helm, and shield of the High Elven Warriors almost exactly as WETA constructed them for the movies. :)

It would be really cool if the handle was leather. They should make a limited addition full-tang version later on.

Jessehk, where did you read that the movie prop had a leather handle? I'm pretty obsessive about the movies and the weapons and armour therein, but I don't remember ever hearing that? Is it in the Weapons & Warfare book, or did you hear it from somewhere else?

I thought all the movie prop handles were just cast resin handles, in order to get the shape, and the raised vine texture on teh handle surface as well.

I didn't mean the prop, I mean the "actual" weapon.
If middle earth actually existed ( ), then the weapon would have a leather handle.
Of course, it looks like leather, I am not completely sure that it is. I might be able to find a quote in the weapons and warfare book, just a minute.
You are probably right about the prop being fiberglass, though :)

EDIT: here is the quote: "The sword was a little over five feet in length, it's overall recurved shape that of an elongated "S". the handle represented half of the total length of the weapons and it's leather-wrapped hilt was etched in gold with a leaf pattern that streched from the pommel to guard."

( LOTR weapons and warfare, pg 15)

Well, not offense. But I don't really trust the weapons and armour book too much. It's great for picture. But it's not very good on sizes ect. And didn't the Last Alliance war last seven years?

when the book said leather wrapped i think it ment like gandalf's and most some other swords that it was a wood grip held to the blade by pins or glued on and then covered in leather. and on the museam replica it could be that way.
