My name is Elena and recently I've started to be interested in fantasy again and I also want to start to write a book. I find it difficult to start so I would love to start to read books because I've been 'lazy' lately...

Sorry for my English, it's not my native language

I'm happy to be a part of this forum :gbounce:

Hi Ellie and welcome to TFF :)
What kind of fantasy stuff do you like to read? There are fans of all types here: dark fantasy, sword and sorcery, urban fantasy, high fantasy...

    S.J Faerlind I'm still wandering.
I need to make a good brainstorming today to see what's going to happen... but I always procrastinate because of the lack of self confidence I guess... :p

I love watching cartoons, anime and any kind of animated movies. From movies, as long as it's not happening in the future with flying stuffs, aliens etc.

What kind of fantasies are urban fantasy and high fantasy?

I am going to make researches...

Hi Ephemeral, the pleasure is mine :)

    Hello Ellie,
Don't worry about your English here on the forum... I'm Amish and writing proper English is always a difficult chore when I'm posting here.

My name's Levi btw, nice to meet you and welcome to the forum.

Well, urban fantasy usually has a component of the modern world in it. For example characters might jump in and out of the modern world or the modern world has a hidden element of fantasy within it. Some mainstream, well known examples would be the Dresden Files books by Jim Butcher or the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. Some of the paranormal romance runs pretty close to this sub-genre too I think.
High fantasy is a fantastic world that has no relation to ours at all. Tolkein's Lord of the Rings trilogy would be a famous example of that kind of fantasy.

    Happy brainstorming btw :)

Hey Sparrow, my English will get better someday... I've started to read English books. :)

S.J. Faerlind, thank you for the answer. I was wandering but never thought of sub categories of this category (fantasy). I was wandering and I didn't know how to explain what I actually want to write or read about. Not that I can do that now (hehehe) but I'm getting closer. I see arrows that are showing me my way. I was reading yesterday on the internet what I could find, today I will make more researches. I will make brainstorming every day so I can put these blockades down.

AlphaAlex from series I've started with Digimon and now I watch Naruto & Naruto Shippuden. From anime movies I truly love Ghibli studio movies, then Tales from Earthsea, Kotonoha no Niwa, Haturobi no mori e, 5 centimeters per second, The place promised in our early days, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

I can't define myself, but it's more like I love childish stories, fulfilled with emotions that bring us right back in the childhood, I also love romantic stories, but also dynamic... something between the real world and fantasy.. but not robots, no sci-fi.

And it's frustrating that I can't write on English, but I have to write on my native language... :D

I'm a huge Ghibli fan. I love all of their films, and Howl's Moving Castle is my personal favourite of all of them! You have excellent taste, ma'am! :D

5 centimeters per second and The girl who lept through time are two I am yet to watch. I hear 5 centimeters is a tragic story.

As for Ghibli, it is hard not to love. Although there were a couple of movies that didn't appeal to me. Mostly all masterpieces though.

By the way, there is an anime thread here http://www.thefantasyforum.com/showthread.php?27486-Anime-Discussion-Thread if you ever wanted to have a chat about it.

    Hello and welcome.

I think you should definitely go ahead and write a book. It will be a great learning experience for you. I will be happy to help you with a bit of editing if you need it. FYI: I am an ESL teacher and an editor by trade.

Omg, thank you... any kind of help is needed. I was thinking to start to write short stories and practice my English cause as you can see I have grammatical issues and also my vocabulary is low for a writer.

Any kind of help is needed.

    Thank you a lot. :)

We occasionally have a short story writing contest here at TFF... you ought to team up with someone and try your hand at it.
