Yes, Rowling can't really compete with Tolkien in any department, which is why I find the comparison a strange one. Might as well compare LOTR to the Moomins...:)

    Harry never stood a chance!
this is exactly what I thought the results would be when I saw the title of this thread.
-Tolkein's is just so much more open, I mean middle earth is this one giant environment...

Rowling isn't fit to lick Tolkien's boots as far as I'm concerned, so I voted LotR.

to even think H.Potter the is better than LotR,your m8 needs his head checked:)Middle Earth is by far the most comprehensive Fantasy world...With multiple languages,Alphabets,,,Not to mention blood-lines,Geneologys,personal historys ect... Tolkien worked on Middle Earth for 50+ years...How long H.Potter?7?-10?..Don't get me wrong..I enjoyed Harry Potter Novels....But Middle Earth is where it all began for me...No contest!!!!!!!

Although I think LOTR is a freakin awesome series of movies, its not one I could watch over again, although I could with HP. So it's a tough decision.. Even though HP is more for my age group. LOTR is much more involved and epic..

If Tolkien was the first to do the whole high/epic fantasy thing and is one of the forfathers of fantasy then technically he isn't 'the same old, sold epic adventure story"

While we're at it, let's compare...

    Roman Legion VS USMC

    Chariot VS Nascar

Hot Air Balloon VS F-22 Raptor

....in my own arsehole way I've compared the same thing this thread is. Without LOTR and the founders of the fantasy genre there would be NO Harry Potter. IMO.

I voted for Tolkien. On my opinion his books are on a higher level. He created a whole world with it's history, mythology and geography. It's more like a complete story. Harry Potter may be an interesting book (although I had never been it's fan), but if compared to Tolkien's works, it seems unholy. Like a youth compared to an old wise one. But those are my personal thoughts))

As I see it Harry Potter is like pop music. Not incredibly good but very popular for some odd reason. Tolkien all the way here.

    Old English?

What are they teaching these days?

Stylistically, JRRT is a little old fashioned, but that's all.

Tolkien. There is no real comparison. Not that HP is bad, but the difference is enormous.

I've been reading fantasy fiction for nearly three decades. Tolkien and Moorcock were my introduction to the genre. I can understand why some people may look down on HP, but to me it provides simple escapism. Of course the HP universe isn't on a par with the universe Tolkien created, but I very much doubt it was Rowling's intention to compete with him. I read fantasy for entertainment, and both LotR and HP provide that, so to me it's a draw.
