Tolkein is often reffered to as the father of fantasy-he made the elves, dwarves and fantasy in general became known and to become popular the reasons his books do have glaring cliches in the fantasy genre is because he made most of them by writing his books.

J.K.Rowling on the other hand made a fantasy world from other sources even though theres nothing wrong with that Tolkein built his world, langauage and history from scratch.

    GO Tolkein

I don't think it's more in depth, Rowling always seems to have quite a few new surprises up her sleeve during every book. However, I think the HP movies sucked, while LOTR ones rocked. And anyway, I still think LOTR wins by a long shot.

Here is a list of LotR character and their most similar HP counterparts. Imagine them fighting each other or even compare the character of each and tell me which you think wins.

The black haired heroes: Frodo Baggins vs. Harry Potter
Alright, Harry might be able to kill Frodo, but then he is a Hobbit and they're pretty tough. But don't get me started on the comparison of humility, self-sacrificing, and gentleness towards others.

The sidekicks: Sam Gamgee vs. Ron Wealey
Just look how they both react when faced with giant spiders.

The white haired wizards: Gandalf vs. Dumbledore
What would happen if Dumbledore lost his wand? He wouldn't be able to fall a mile with a balrog and electricute him, I can tell you that.

The dark, mysterious warriors: Aragorn vs. Sirius
Both are courageous, but Aragorn never wines. And Aragorn can read the minds of others, and can wrestle with the Dark Lord mentally.

The big dark guys: Beorn vs. Hagrid
Please. Hagrid's nice and all, but I can't imagine him taking on Beorn. True, he would stand more of a chance than most, but it wouldn't cut it.

The dark cloaked villains: Nazgul vs. Dementors
Gifted though Harry Potter may be, I cannot imagine him repelling over 100 Nazgul.

The CG guys: Gollum vs. Dobby
Can you imagine Gollum beating himself like an idiot every few seconds? And while Dobby can blast people back a ways, I imagine Gollum would be too crafty for poor Dobby. But I do wish someone would give Gollum some clothes.

The pretty blonde boys: Legolas vs. Draco
Oh, please. One's a coward, one's not. If there were both facing danger, at least Legolas can take out anything that comes against him (except a ghost of course).

The Dark Lords: Sauron vs. Voldemort
Both the first HP film and the first LotR film have shots of the Dark Lord killing people. Compare them and tell me which would win in a fight.

The only powerful lady: Galadriel vs. McGonnagal
This is interesting, comparing elves with wizards. But think of who is the biggest threat to their respective dark lord.

The obnoxious ones: Pippin and Merry vs. Fred and George
The Weasley twins might just beat Pippin and Merry here, so cheers to them. But I'm not sure how they would work fighting in battle.

No comparison. LOTR is a far, far superior story. Tolkien created a whole world, a whole history. Rowling, while I love her story, based it in modern-day England. There's just not nearly as much imagination in HP as there is in LOTR.
There are some similarities true, but nothing is truly original anymore.

    Nice post Anduril....

Generally, I'd have to also come down on the LOTR side. But then, I grew up with this story, reading it for the first time in 6th grade and numerous time since then. So its really become part of my psyche.
JKR's world is fun and wonderfully creative in a number of ways (I love the moving pictures, every flavor beans and floo powder to name a few). But, as has been said by others, I don't think there is the depth of character that Tolkein's work has. I've read all the HP books and am content. I've read LOTR close to a dozen times and will likely do so again in the future. That, for me, is the difference.

Harry Potter is pretty much the gayest thing, it's just a ripoff of LOTR.

No contest, LOTR has to be better. Everything that HP is built on was created by JRR Tolkien.

LOTR was the second most read book of the 20th century (the Bible was the first). Harry Potter is no where near that kind of status (not even the movies match up to the LOTR films). I go with LOTR on being the better of the two.

I think there is no such a possible way to compare them, LOTR is the equivalent of almost a culture's mythology and comparable with Cervantes' Don Quijote for it's literature. JRR Tolkien wrote the story of a world from it's creation and the origin of the first born to the culmination of the so far grestest battle of it's time, not to mention the huge message the story implies, on the other hand Harry Potter is just a story for kids the plots are on a very lower level, yes, it is easier to read but it is not the same reading experience, maybe he did not quite understood the LOTR story, what makes him preffer HP. (sorry but that's what I think)
