My friend and I are in a sort of fight, over which is better. So, I wanted to know what you thought:
Harry Potter or Tolkien? Here are some of the points which came up in our debate:

    His

1 Tolkien is hard to read because it's old english

2 it's the same old, same old epic adventure story

3 it's a pansy girl story about elves and fairies with no plot

    Mine

1 Harry Potter is just another teen story

2 there's no real passion in Harry Potter, it's just a story and not a world

3 LOTR movie has actors who can actually act :)

4 There's simply more beauty in Tolkien

Tolkien is more adult, it's not kids playing with wands! Tolkien created an entire new world an entire new language! It's one big story, while Harry Potter are mostly repeated stories about Voldemort. LOTR is one strong story with more interesting characters which have stories of their own, histories of their own

Anakin is absolutely right. And, Tatharlin, I think your friend's points aren't true.
OK, I admit LotR is for me really quite hard to read, but that's because my mother tongue isn't English.
And I think LotR is much more than an epic adventure story or something like a fairy tale for girls. OK, there are elves in it. So what?
Has your friend ever read LotR? If yes, has he really thought about what he read? I mean that you sometimes have to read between the lines so that you're able to understand what it's all about. It's not only about rescuing the world and stuff. It's about far more things, things people should sometimes think about.

Personally, Ive always seen Harry Potter as a childrens novel with some fantasy elements. LOTR is an adult book, it has a deeper history, evrything has deeper meaning, it has its own world and languages. How can you compare with that ?

Ah, I wouldnt call Elves pansys, theyve killed tons more than Harry Potter ever will, and theyd kick his ass too.

The 2 are incomparable, One targets kids and the other adults, they aren't even in the same league. I enjoy both but you can't say that one is better. Its kinda like comparing a shark and a lion, in their element they are king but out of them they are both useless. Tolkien is the better writer IMO but harry potter is also a fun read. If this is an arguement on which is more enjoyable then I can't say as the books are too different, but if its down to writing then Tolkien RULES.

I really think that without the influence of LotR on the fantasy genre, Harry Potter would not have acquired the magnitude of the popularity and success it has recieved.

I'm a fan of both, but I definitely LOVE Lotr more. I think the reason Lotr is so much better is that Tolkien creates a delicate and perfect balance between the main story and the side trails, or details of other aspects of the plot. Harry Potter, while being an excellent read, is a single focus on one point of view of every event, all events pertaining to the original story, while Lotr is a tremendous blend of so many focuses that the reader is completely ENGULFED in the tale.

    hehehe... 100% Tolkien so far...

As to me, I don't think Rowling and HP are bad, on the contrary. HP is well-written, in a world of it's own. But there are so little terrains where it can actually beat LoTR. The only thing Rowling handles better is mystery, riddles. That's what makes HP so attractive, but it misses something to beat a classic and epic work like LoTR is.

Oh, I feel bad for the JKR/Harry Potter side of the world. No votes at all? They're really about equal, IMO, and I only picked Lord of the Rings somewhat randomly. As has been said already, they both have their good points, and they were made for completely different reasons and audiences. Tolkien is the better writer, but a lot of times his story can get weighted down by way too many details. I mean, sure, the guy is a genius to come up with all of it, but it can get a little tedious at times.
