No one saw fit to congratulate us, so I guess I will have to do it myself! Have an awesome day, women! Be proud and happy of what we have accomplished (although it should have come to us without a fight).

    Have some cake!

I didn't feel any different on women's day, and nothing special happened, and I don't see why I'd celebrate that I was accidentally born as a woman. And I think pride of someone's accomplishments shouldn't be limited to one day a year, but instead be acknowledged every single day. I think it's quite sad that we need these 'holidays' to remember what we are and what we've done, and what not.

No offense meant or anything, I just don't see much sense in days like these.

I think that is Firi's way of saying that she wants chocolates and cake - EVERY DAY!

Personally I've no problem with celebrations, life can sometimes get rather heavy with the obligations and the formal things we have to do (work - tax forms - bills - food - etc...) so I think holidays and special dates to help to give a formal pause to things and a bit of a wake-up call. It helps to break up the regular churn of the days.

Of course if life is dealing you a good hand of cards and you're having great times already then the holidays can feel a bit useless or at least nothing extra special. I do also agree that every holiday is very heavily commercialised - then again I suspect that they've always had this element - although its far far FAR more bombarded at us now

I don't find it necessary to have a "women's day" either. I think that it's about as useful as "Black History Month" in the US. Special acknowledgement of a race/gender causes more division, in my opinion. We all want to be treated equally, yet we celebrate days or months where we aren't.

I wonder which country had mother's day first?

I think some of these special days of recognition we have in America served a great purpose when they were first designated and made into law... but I agree that things like 'Black History Month' have now become obsolete and highlight the fact that all is not equal. Breast cancer awareness is another one of those things that have just gotten out of hand in the States. That pink ribbon symbol is everywhere now and has lost its impact.

You're exactly right. Women's Day.... Patronizing, sexist BS in my opinion.

Hmm in the UK we have Mothers day but we also have Fathers day. I don't think we really have many specific holidays that are solo targeted (barring that darn valantines day - where is my singles day!).

Heck we don't even have a St. George's holiday and he's supposed to be our patron saint of the nation.
