Ok so i'm guessing something like this has been posted before but here i am.

What's with all the guests...? Seriously there is like 5 users and over 50 guests on here at any given time. I've been thinking about it, and there are a number of possibilities.

    1. Users who can't be bothered logging in and just lurk the forum untill they see something worth posting in and then login.

    2. Some people just really like reading the forum but won't post for a number of reasons: they don't want to, or are afraid to, etc...

    3. People are spying on other people. Some people might be watching certain converstaions and following certain people around the forum... Creepy.

    4. There are just a whole bunch of random people who just stumble upon the forum all the time, and that's why there are so many guests.

I'm bored and nothing seems to be happening so there you have it... A rant about the hundreds of guests that lurk the forum.

One of the reasons spammers hit forums is that forums are spidered by the big search engines. Links to their site on another, such as tff, can add weight (in terms of search engine result position ie 1st page or whatever) to their site which is why they post them everywhere.

The search engines are also interested in useful content they may find on tff (not spam section lol). So if someone searched Google for 'Lord of the rings...blah/blah' a page from tff could be amongst the results returned to the searcher. That's what Google are interested in ~ potentially relevant content.

    The SWINE!

We should make TFF invisible, so it wont show up for the spiders!

Is there even a way to do that?

No, because then nobody else would be able to find the forum.

So stop spamming and post relevant content, that way new members can find us.

Yes in the robots.txt file on the server is the easiest method, or by automatically making every link/page a 'no follow', 'no index' link, but tff want to be found so that would be counter productive. Using 'no follow' on external links within posts/profiles would negate any value spammers could derive from posting.

I'm more intrigued by the guests than mad at them. I have fun guessing why certain folks would choose to not log in, or not join and just read, or whatever. :p

I'm one of those spooky guests. I only log in when I want to respond to a thread. It seems pointless to stay logged in if I'm not in the mood to contribute anything, so I don't.:D

Heh, seems convenient. I just told it to keep me logged in forever when I logged in for the first time.

I CBA to log in to post on the forums sometimes, or people (Met) sends me a link to a funny thread and I read through it without logging in.

    *Feels violated*

I also stay logged in at all times... it's easier than having to log in when i want to post a comment, and i don't come across as a lurker.
