Yeah, the yellow works. I had a senior moment there.

This was my first shot at the cover, and I just copied the colour from the symbol to tie the whole thing together. I changed it because:

    1) the Caduceus is used as a only a medical symbol in North America,
    2) the best Rod of Asclepius I could find wasn't as impressive, and
    3) the cover looked better for a medical thriller than a fantasy.

Are you saying grey in the clouds or the background, but not both? That makes sense.

New challenge: I have to do covers for stories that don't take place in the same world, so the covers have to look similar, but not the same.

That definitely does look like a medical book. Hmm... a snake and a staff, but visibly both?
Not sure about the red border, but the clouds are looking really good there and the red is a good match too.

As to the grey; if you're using colour in the background, then do not use any grey.
The colours used for the clouds should be close to those used for the background gradient.

Choosing different text colours might show a good difference between worlds.

Here's a try, using a potion (less of a modern institution icon):

I was going to go with this one.

The red border was just to match the lettering and Caduceus.

I think that the yellow is too thick and that there is not enough black for the text.

And you said that you will have a full quality image for it once the design is done?

As to the clouds, I still think that you should use a radial gradient emanating from the centre (if you cant do it, paint it?) and should also remove some of the clouds. A good thing would be to change their Blending Mode (if Paint.net allows that).

The image is deliberately blurred to keep it from looking like a photogarph. I can reduce the blurring or keep looking for another image.

This has a slightly sharper image, a radial gradient, a different blend mode and more pronounced shadow on the letters. In the final version of the image I'd trim off some more of the left wrist.

I had to take most of them down to make room for the new ones.

    And thank you.

That last one is good, I really like it: you got the right level of blur/sharpness on the image, although I think that the colours are slightly too toned down and dark.

For the pictures, I've been using http://imghack.se : you don't need an account but it knows which ones are yours with a cookie, so you can upload as many as you want.

Druid, thanks for the link. It should make this much easier.

I also have a bunch of short stories that don't take place in that same world, and I'm looking for a look that's a little different, but still identifiable as mine. Do you have any ideas on these as sets? Stylized dragon or more detailed? Everything can be changed, at least a little. Opinions on the title fonts? That's Folkard on "Masks" and Knight's Quest on the others.

Should I switch my name to the top on the longer works? I think it looks better that way.

Yes, if I go with the black/blue version of "Waiting" I'll be more careful erasing the excess cloud. This is just proof of concept.

I liked the green and blue backgrounds with the yellow lettering and the stylized "head-on" red dragon better than the black and white one. I thought the red/black gradient background was cool for the dragon but you might have to make the middle fade to grey (or overlay it with a grey shape) if you use the red dragon.

Could just change the colour of the dragon.

That green background one is amazing and I like the others in the same style, although I also quite enjoyed some of the second set.
The first of the two newer dragon ones is good. You certainly have developed a good style here.

The font on the green one works really well too.

I like the black dragon better than the yellow one. There's a red line around the black of the dragon though that I think you should go over in black. The red line makes it look like a cut and paste image or an image you only partially filled with black colour. Otherwise I think it's a great cover.

I think I'm going with this set.

The red lines around the stylized dragon were leftovers from the original colour that didn't fill when I dumped the paint bucket on it, but a second treatment targetted at them worked just fine.

Thanks, Druid, SJ, and everyone else who chipped in.

Now to settle the covers for the novellas.

Those definitely work very well, although the black writing on the Fox one is not very legible at a quick glance.

Glad I've been able to help, as from what I see here you have progressed a lot. These are great.
