    Hi,

I've read a lot of SF/Fantasy, Historical Fiction and some books that are difficult to classify but have some fantasy elements or are a blend of several genres.
I'm fascinated by how the same themes seem to reappear again and again, but with different faces and in different decors. I've always felt that Merlin, Gandalf, the older Obi-wan Kenobi and Dumbledore are, if not brothers, at least close relatives.
Just to give you an idea: I like Marion Zimmer Bradley, both her Darkover-novels and Mists of Avalon, Asimov's Foundation trilogy, Herbert's Dune books, but I also like Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy. The last ones probably because I'm gay myself. I can understand why a lot of people like LoTR, and while I liked reading them (and seeing the films) I can't say I'm a big fan. Same goes for Harry Potter, which I think brilliant but for a young crowd.
That's it for now. Off to browse around.

Welcome to TFF Andrew, I hope you will enjoy your stay here. I've never read or barely even heard of the books you mentioned you liked there, but its nice to have people here that like some different styles. That's what makes it interesting.
And from Belgium as well, there's been a few lately signing up, and our very own beloved Druid of Lûhn is from belgium.

And i agree on the brothers thing there, maybe except for Obi-wan, he feels out of place for me. And if youd look at the Merlin in the Camelot Tv series that is young and hot, maybe not, but in my head i picture him old and with long white beard. So that works!

    Anyways, welcome again!

Hi Andrew. I've enjoyed most of those except the Alexander Trilogy which I haven't heard of before. Does it have anything to do with Alexander the Great?

    Hi Lodriraj

Yes, the books are about Alexander the Great.

Fire from Heaven relates his youth and education in Macedon until the murder of his father, Philip II.
The Persian Boy is about his conquests until his death.
Funeral Games is about the power struggle after his death.

There are some similarities between the writing styles of Mary Renault and MZB, though Renault is more historical fiction than fantasy.

    Welcome to TFF!

I can recommend reading about Joseph Campbell's theory of the monomyth - he explains these similarities. This website gives a great overview for beginners. Just in case you're interested in the background of these reoccurrences. :D

I've heard so much about the Darkover novels, maybe I should really finally read them. I liked Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon series, however Glenraven is still one of my favourite books of hers!

I know Campbell's work The Hero with a Thousand Masks. Very interesting stuff.

    I haven't read Glenraven (yet).

Does anybody know how long it takes for posts to come out of moderation?

More than a day ago I posted in another thread. While in this one (probably because I started it) my posts appear immediately, in the other thread it went in moderation status. It still hasn't appeared.

Well, I like your taste in Science Fiction... Dune and Foundation are the best of the best, though I couldn't stomach the last two Dune books as Herbert went way too quasi-religious for my liking.

    And welcome to the forum!

    Thanks, Sparrow. :)

How strange. The quasi-religious tone in the last books by Herbert didn't bother me that much. They did however in the last Foundation book by Asimov.

I also read two Foundation-books by other writers. Never again. And I won't even touch Dune-books by other writers. :(

Welcome to TFF Andrew! Another person from Belgium. As Emelie said; loads signing up right now.

Have you read Brethren or Empire of the Moghul? Both very good historical fiction series.

And as to the post not appearing: did you post a link? You need a certain amount of posts before being able to post links.

    Aww, thanks Emmy!

    Thanks Druid,

That must be it. I posted a link. Will it show up after a certain amounts of posts or will it remain forever in the parallel world of Moderation? :)

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll look them up an add them to my TBR-list. For the moment I'm not reading as I'm writing myself. I can't concentrate on fiction by others while writing myself, and I'm wary of ideas from others "bleeding through." :(

I think you'll need to post it again, but I think that you also need 10 posts before doing so.

How old are you (if I might ask)?
