General Knowledge doesn't have to come directly from school really. If people got GN only from school, we'd be pretty pathetic LOL

So where does general knowledge come from?
What do you define to be general knowledge? Why do I have to know that the Mongolian empire was exactly 4 times bigger than the Roman one? I only need to know that they were bigger and that their tactics was better since they didn't care about the peoples beliefs, but about their skills and money. So more people were willing to join them etc etc.
I don't like numbers like 753 BC Rome was born, or 333 AD the battle at Issus or stuff like that. I like to get the bigger meaning.

    Contend?

I didn't mean specifically the fact that it was 4 times bigger, but the fact the the Mongol Empire was indeed bigger. The fact is stated quite often in movies and such.

General Knowledge comes from not being a total amoeba and actually reading and watching documentaries and such. Not even that, just the mere fact of listening to other people.

Yup my grandparents always tell me about the Mongolian empire, but I don't care since it was before my time ;)
I know what you mean, seriously.
Don't worry about my General education, I'm watching Documentaries and stuff, but in Germany, about 90% of them seem to be about Hitler and Nazi Germany. Weird eh? One could think we'd all be pretty sick of it by now, if you can watch another one every 2nd day (I'm not joking, seriously not)

Yep, I can confirm that. Since I've been studying history I've been more interested to watch the History Discovery Channel (forgot the exact name, sorry), but most of the documentaries that are broadcasted are either about WWII or about the fall of the Berlin wall. >_<

At least you didn't have to spend a year or two studying for the exams about mostly the economic and social matters of Greece from around 1850 to the early 20th Century. Now that's boring.

By the way don't you find such History Channel documentaries stupid some times? They all have those "enthusiastic" people talking and most of them are supposed to be experts but they always make assumptions.Seriously I've watched many such documentaries and they all go like "Oh yeah...back then they were using leather for that...and they found a piece of leather on the excavation site...so it must have been a piece of the king's tent. And around the tend they had those...blah blah....and they probably had guards walking around and talking and blah blah blah....and oooh that king probably detested....pork(lol)because he was limp so he probably also detested women....and he didn't have a son but he was also a coward because there's no report of him taking part in a battle....and....oh well there you are."

If you know what I mean. They always make assumptions about everything and they do it in such an enthusiastic way,it makes them sound positive about something and makes the viewer thing it's a fact.

Definately Rome. Rome at its peak was unchallenged, its legions were magnificent and able to crush armies many times their own size, and their cultural legacy undeniably significant. While the Mongols were much bigger and very powerful, in my opinion Rome was clearly superior due to their stability- they lasted for hundreds of years, while the Mongols (despite their power) collapsed within a century of Genghis' death.

    Well said ShadowDragon!

The Mongols collapsed easily like you said, while the Romans left a rich cultural legacy to the world.Languages, laws, army tactics and organization, architecture, philosophy(all those quotes we use in latin sometimes).

Not to mention it's so cool to go downtown and see the Arch of Gallerius :p

And if we see it legally, the Roman Empire lasted until 1453(if we take into consideration the Byzantine Empire which was the actual continuation of the Roman Empire).

That was really due to the death of Chingis Khan and the stupidity of his sons.

Well imo Kublai did a decent job of taking over from Genghis altho he nvr reached his predecessor's standards. After that, dunno. But tbh for the entire Han ppl to revolt just thru some half-baked plan of putting messages in pastries and actually having the whole thing succeeded in a vital sense gets to say a lot abt how screwed up the ruling system was at least for that time. :S

I say the mongol empire. Their reign wasn't very long but they did something no other empire could do

Well, that's b/c of Genghis and Kublai Khan. The former created a vast legacy that led to an empire while the latter conquered China and created the Yuan dynasty. Still to have the Han ppl overthrowing the entire Yuan heirachy due to some random messages-in-pastries plan is the sole testimony of how low down the ruling ppl has gone down to. :S

Too bad the standard of the Yuan dynasty rule went downhill post Kublai. In fact the Yuan dynasty was arguably one of the shortest reigns in Chinese history. :S
