If you haven't seen ROTK or read the book, you may not want to view this thread.

That being said, is anyone else who had seen ROTK impressed with how PJ potrayed Golum at the end of the movie when he recovers the ring. The way he was dancing at the ledge, and even as he was falling towards the lava, I thought Golum's expression of sheer bliss of holding the ring again captured the moment.

Loved the movie. Thought PJ could have expanded more on some of the scenes. But I guess that's why he has the Extended Editions on DVD. :draught:

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

Personally I loved the way PJ showed Sam beating the crap out of Gollum all the time! Seeing as he didn't show Sam breaking his walking stick over Gollum's back in Shelob's Lair!

Gollum was amazing. The expressions were so lifelike I forgot he was computerized. And just his whole character was exactly like it was in the book.

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

He was the BEST computer generated character EVER! He looked so real, it was amazing. Serkis did such a good job with him too. My favorite scene in the whole movie is when Gollum looks at Sam and says... "What's this?... Crumbs on hisss jacketses??" as he brushes the crumbs of his coat. "He's always stuffing his fat face..." I laughed so hard. Tricksy little Gollum.

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

I love how PJ portrayed Gollum. The only problem I had was, didn't he fall on his own in the book? I can't remember exactly but I don't remember Frodo and Gollum fighting like that. I could be wrong

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

No you're right he did fall on his own but they probably just changed it so they could show Frodo dangling from a cliff and add more drama....

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

There is a nice bit of drama added to Frodo's fall, because it contrasts with Sam earlier telling him to let the Ring go. In a philosophical way, Sam was telling him to let go of the evil and everything that ruined his life. When Frodo fights Gollum and they both fall, Sam tells Frodo not to let it go, to not follow the Evil Thing to its doom when he has the chance to go back to the good in his life (in this case, loyal Sam). Both hobbits don't think they'll make it home, but Sam reminds Frodo it's better to die in the company of good friends who love you rather than chasing a destructive force that you can't fully control.

Wow, I think a lot at 1 in the morning.

damn I cant wait to see this movie, after reading the book I did feel like Tolkien killed off gollum too quickly and the book gets really slow after that

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

i don't know, i found gollum's final performance funny lol. It just seemed too kiddy or something. Like it was so serious and then you have this hairless monkey jumping around smiling from ear to ear. kinda throws off the tempo

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

I thought it was magnificent, Gollum was incredibly lifelike, his final scene in the movie was improved for the most part. Though I found it odd that he lasted so long in the lava, though that might have been the ring fearing destruction.

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

I didn't think so. I thought it was great, showing just how much he really was still attached to the Ring. And plus it was just like it was in the book.

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

I loved that scene.. esp. Gollum! The camera through the ring was just the icing on the cake for me. But as Aemon pointed out, I didn't liek the way he just kinda drowned in the lava as if it were quick sand ... there was no crisping up, or eye-popping? I mean, I know that wouldn't look the best.. [?] but.. y'know? To get maximum realism to the scene? I don't know? Just didn't seem all that plausible? ..The One Ring however, was perfect! Drawing out its destruction like sweet revenge, I loved it!

It was great how there was no real drama to the rings destuction
It didnt explode or anything, just quietly slipped under the lava.

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

Given how hot it was, you would assume that Gollum would have disintegrated before he hit the lava ...

But it was a great scene!

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

THe only thing I would have liked to have included in Gollums death scene was his last word, preciousssssssssss. I kept waiting for it as he fell and breifly floated on the lava, but it didn't come.

I still think it would have been better if Gollum had fallen in one his own. If they wanted Frodo dangling Gollum could have grabbed him.

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

I agree with those who said that his staying on the lava lasted a tad bit long. Like JasonBL mentioned, in reality, he would of been gone way before hitting the surface, but that wouldn't be as interesting or dramatic. I think it would of been better if he had melted as soon as he hit the bottom. But thats another IMO for you.

    Re: Golum - SPOILER

In reality, Gollum would have burst into flames just a few feet from the bottom, but you forget that he still had the ring in hand. The ring gives special powers to even those who merely possess it, even without putting it on, such as immortality, and doubtlessly many other powers, so I imagine this was so with Gollum as well. The ring also wouldn't melt right away, because of the time it would take to (how to word this?) dispell the spells placed upon it that made it indestructible. Nor would it sink right away either, because of the density of the lava.
