I'm thinking it's similar to the medieval knights. Probably most sons of wealthy families who don't inherit the lord title, would become knights or "ser"

Very cool. I'm definitely going to enjoy this book. :D

To be a Ser, you have to take Knights vows, and have to be awarded the title by doing something "honourable"
Also, a squire can be knited by their subjects ( is that the right word?). As well, lords can knight
people based on their family, eg: Lannister, Stark, Greyjoy, etc., basically, what Nienor said :p

thats my understanding, though I could be wrong.

Im going to have to reread this series again, it is definately one off my favourite series to date. I read this series about 2 - 4 years ago so its starting to become fuzzy. Everyone enjoy these fantastic books.

Aye, I'm going through another re-read of it as we speak. It's still a great read over and over. And yes Ser is just like Sir. Any knight or lord can knight someone.

I'm about 50 pages into it so far. I like his style, though I'm still getting a handle on all the sublties.

    Yes Martin is very good!!

Read all the books when they first came out, he's No 2. on my hit parade.

Steven Erikson is the best I've ever read.

HMM.. Maybe I should start an Erikson thread.. :devilbat:

I finished A Storm of Swords about a month ago and I think the series is fantastic. Possibly the best reading I've ever done. :D

Ive finished AGOT and ACOK, unfortunently these books are very hard to find around here and I had major trouble looking for ASOS, but my girlfriend (shes so sweet) got me it over the net. But its an Easter present so I have to wait til Sunday to get it.

So far im in love with this series, and I think I like it better than WoT, which is a big thing for me, because I love WoT. Probably the best book series Ive ever read. I love it.
