I think my grandma was crueler than Sparrow is :p And I still liked her. You just have to approach him with the right expectations. He won't be your pal, and he can be rude and cruel.. but he can be funny too. Plus, if you don't think so... he could work like a catalysator to bring us all together. A common enemy and all that? Like the Scandinavian countries against the Russians! Though it could also go the other way around... Divide us into "pro-sparrow" groups and "anti-sparrow" groups. Hmmm..
By the way, where did Greybeard go?

I think that one of the main reasons of this low activity and all that is school/uni. It's approaching end of term, so we have less free-time. I don't know about others but I"m approaching my last year so have more work, which is why I've not been in SPAM. But in two or three weeks I'd love to, and maybe start SPAM Wars 3.0?

Greybeard was assassinated by Sparrow. Blown up at a debate.

I think that Sparrow's more like Greybeard but just with stronger, less correct opinions. We shouldn't really talk about this though, especially not here.

I just think it's a very foolish plan to discuss single members in a thread about moderation. For starters, it's not a very diplomatic thing to do. And it's not like the members under scrutiny can't read all ow what's discussed :)

I honestly don't. I like that he often breathes new life into discussions, even if he's indeed quite cruel sometimes. :p

Let's just keep doing it until the mods/admins get annoyed by it. We might just speed up their decision to choose a new mod or something. Or maybe we don't. I don't mind. :D

We caught their attention for a short while, but if they're having problems or whatever in their lives that stop them from coming here, then it would be easier for them to choose somebody that could help around until they can at least come back or choose some others to be mods too.
That would help everybody I think.

I think it's better to talk about people while they can read it themselves instead of to talk about people behind their backs!

Well, he could easily read it here if the thread interested him. I just still don't think that it's very fair on him. He hasn't done anything wrong here.

Wow, are my ears ever burning. :)

First of all, I am definitely not a cruel person.
Leastwise in any way that I would define "cruel". I am however a person devoid of most pretense, formality, and yes, sometimes tact and common courtesy. I certainly don't want to hurt someone's feeling to the point they leave the forum or stop participating in non-fantasy threads.

I'm sorry, I don't have an online (virtual) personality that's any different than my real life personality. And I think when perhaps some folks become uncomfortable in a discussion because things get a bit intense, that's when I really enjoy things. I love to engage people, love to be engaged... hell, these days we sure can't talk about politics/religion/philosophy/sex in the workplace, and even at family gatherings some things are off limits. If we don't blow off some steam here than where?

The other thing I'd like to mention... I wish there were more lively fantasy threads.
After all, presumably that's why we all joined up in the first place?

Well, I apologize then for saying that you're cruel. Perhaps, that's just the way that you come off. I am also not any different in real life than I am on the forum. I never have been, which gets me odd looks in real life :D

When you do engage someone in a conversation about politics/religion/sex/philosophy, if you don't want a huge fight, it's best to be a little sensitive about it. I actually had a conversation last night with Ray about religion, and had we been abrasive about our beliefs or called each other stupid or said "You're wrong" instead of "I think you're wrong", there's a chance we'd not be friends. I can't tell you how many friends I've lost because they simply can't stand it that someone believes something other than what they believe.

Also... I'm not sure "blowing off steam" is the best thing to do in a debate thread >_>

Maybe we could actually make an active effort to make the fantasy threads more lively? I know we always say we will, but maybe we should do it, actually?

I meant as in Politically Correct. A little forced and harsh is how I meant it. I found it difficult to find the right word and obviously didn't.

Points well taken. I'll make an effort to be a little more sensitive to the views others may have.

Late to the party, but I think this is a good suggestion. I ended up moving the book club to General Books simply because I needed a mod to open up the old book club section to new members and couldn't get hold of one.

Oh, and as to the above discussion, I think Sparrow is definitely a good addition to the forum :).

Well, Nienor has been back a few times, but hasn't answered my PM asking her to open the book club.

We do seem to have lost recruits though...

Forums generally have died a death with other social media taking up the baton. What's the future hold for tff when most of the really great times were now many years ago and those individuals have grown up, have a RL, other priorities and only pop back for nostalgic reasons? Less attention from the admins / mods surely reflects reduced activity and that most of what is posted is spam so nonsense and not worth reading :)

Perhaps focus should be on how members see tff's future, ideas to spark a renaissance, and then worry about moderating it.

The forums are still a top google result for fantasy forum - and whilst social media site have taken over somewhat with general chit chat, forums are still a major focus for key topical discussion; connection with specialist interest groups and a general pool of more focused resources. I don't see them going away any time soon at all.

TFF I think has floundered partly because it grew upon the back of the LOTR movies - it sparked a massive growth, but also meant that when the movies dwindled the attention did as well. The casual fantasy fan slipped away and we were left with, more or less, a smaller, closer community.

I think TFF could restart itself, but it would need admin attention to react to the shifts. Hiding a large number of the under used subforms and categories would allow the site to not only increase focus upon currently active areas, but to also allow it to present a more active appearing site. At the moment we have a lot of sections that mostly only see one or two people giving them active new threads - so to the outsider the site has a lot of categories and no action going on. Focusing the site back to its roots by having generalist overall categories and stripping down could greatly boost activity or at least not lose newbies in a sea of inactivity.

It's hardly surprising that the fantasy forum is top of the google search results for 'fantasy forum'!

How many forum sites do you now see that have dozens of active users online at the same time? Wind back 6-9 years and that was the norm ~ buzzing with activity, really good fun or maybe that's a rose-tinted-glasses view because we were all younger?

Many forums are losing activity, even technology ones.

But as we've said many times in this thread: what the forum really needs is active admins to clean the place up so as to attract more people to it: there are always loads of guests.
OR's right as to many of the sub-forums too; some should be updated, and others moved (ASoIaF maybe join 'Fantasy Worlds' now that the TV series is here).
