Alright, heres an arguement for you to think about.

    Football,

which sport do you think football is?

does it mean the american version with all the pads and quarterback?, or does it mean the english one with all the kicking and offsides?

I am english, so i firmly believe that what you call soccer, is Football.

    lets look at the facts:
    1) the english version dates mack to almost medieval times and further, possibly in roman times. American football dates back, well america doesnt even go back before that!!!

2)American Football, is not unsimilar to the sport Rugby, which was also invented before American football, the differences are just in some rules and such, and no pads.

3)the word Football, is very innapropriate for the american sport, which hardily utilises the foot, as for most of the game the ball is carried. in the english game the ball is kicked using feet for the vast majority of the game.
also the word "Ball" would more suitable describe the ball used in the english version rather that the american one.

    So, let the debate begin.

The first image that pops into my head when I hear the word football is my husband sitting on the couch on a Sunday afternoon with a sixxer beside him. :p Diving deeper into the image, I see grown men wearing pads and tight pants pushing each other around in effort to access a brown leather ball. That's it...my crystal ball has gone black.

Is there no deep end to that pool of thought?

Football is the ultimate team sport. 11 guys on the field working together make things successful.

The beer thing is a great perk also.

    Yay futbol!

    Futbol Americano es MAL!

What we here in the states call soccer is the true owner of the name football. AS Crusader pointed out, it has been around alot longer, and, guess what, you actually use your FEET to play it (what a shock! I never would have guessed that a game called football would be played with your feet!)The only time the foot comes in contact with the ball in American football is during the point after. Anyway, soccer is just overall cooler, the male players don't all think the have to be macho red meat kind of people.

thank you, and in american football the players dont really seem that macho, the huge pads just look silly, i mean, look at rugby, the players wear no pads, they beat the living sh*t out of eachother if they have to, thats a tough sport, you can call that macho if you want.

    Yes my kind of debate.

Football belongs to the English game. FOOT and BALL. God I hate it when even sports news says first to soccer.....ITS FOOTBALL thats me screaming at the TV. American verison should be called soccer cause they 'soc' each other.

No actually I agree with you, thats very true. If I'm referring to the evil sport, I always say American Football, as opposed to real football

Doyler that is my stance, im always shouting at those damn american sports-name theives, and i do think that their game should be converted to the name Soccer as that is a name that they did invent, instead of stealing.

I dont really support any individual prem league team, i find it just divides people when someone goes "who do you support then?" and if they support a rival the conversation is DEAD.

I decided that its best to just enjoy games and pick a favourite per-game. My dad and oldest brother both support burnley and i go sometimes but dont really support them avidly.

however i get very passionate every four years during the world cup, because everyone can agree with that, i love my country and am always fulll of national pride.

Let me begin by saying that, as an American, I think our version of football is the greatest sport on earth, akin to gladiatorial combats of the ancient world.
It is defintiely the ultimate team sport.

Obviuosly, when I hear the word football, I think of American football. No one can seriuosly argue that soccer can legitimately claim ownership of the term football, as some form of the game has been around for centuries, possibly millenia. I think most Americans recognize that soccer is called football in other countries, and don't really have a majpr problem with it. This, of course, is predicated on the assumption that those soccer folks don't try and usurp the name here in the USA. That would just get real ugly, real fast.
