For some reason, while watching the scene where the Easterling Army marches through Mordor's front gate (you know, where Frodo falls and Sam has to cover him with with the elven cloak) I got the feeling that the 'soldiers' used were actualy women. Look at their eyes and their general frame/profile. Don't they seem womanish?

I thought that the first time I saw the movie too, but after watching it as much as I have. And having a knowledge of stage make-up(I've been in a TON of stage productions) it's definately just the eye make up that makes them look like girls.

The eye make-up definitely makes them look more feminine. Sure some of the people could have been female. Probably some of the smaller orcs were played by women too.

I thought they were all Ninjas; since Ninjas are asexual, they must be male.

Yeah, and then there's the Bearded Ladies of Rohan who were extras, but they probably wouldn't use women on close-ups like that, because lets face it, it wasn't traditional to have women in an army.

No but I distinctly got the impression that they were women. Even my friends said so. Does anyone know whether they had to use women to fill the roles? They were wearing masks afterall.

Some of they very well might have been, as a lot of the extras were women. Some of the orcs were women as well.

    ...Orcish women...what a charming thought!:p;)
Oh well, never mind about it then:) Though I was specificly wondering about the two soldiers in the closeup. that's why I was surprised. I can understand using women for extras, but not for a close up shot.

There was a female uruk-hai @ helm's deep, and all the rohirrim horsemen (except eomer) at the meeting of gimli, legolas and aragorn with riders of rohan are females (I think this was shown in the making of the two towers special extended edition)

Maybe there are both men and women?? When I first saw the Two Towers, I couldn't tell whether the two Easterlings that you see close up were male or female, but when I saw it again, one looked more feminine than the other.

No it wasn't the clothes. It was the face structure; too delicate for a man. Even the general body frame.

Well maybe u should look at the facial features of one of the soldiers, cuz judging by the cheekbones, one of them was definitely female.

It was Sam who fell reem.

well im not saying that Tolkien or Jackson expressly meant for the Easterling Army to be a bunch of females, but there were female extras that were used for some of the actors for them. Look closely at the Easterling that looks around at the scenery: it is a female extra, judging by the cheekbones alone.
