I always take Rome pretty early on in the game. Just because it feels awesome to do it. You have to play your cards right but it's fun.

I haven't been able to really get into this franchise...but I haven't given it a hell of a lot of time, and I have always been an age of empires fan.
I do own a copy of Medieval 2 Total War, but lost interest in it pretty quick.
Might have to give it another go, seeing how there is all this love for it on here by people whose opinions I give credit too (Except for Kakashi of course!!:p)

Are you making sure to keep your taxes on low from turn 1?

    Almost only Med. 2 TW!
From what I've heard; Empire TW isn't liked that much. I'm surprised that somebody voted for it.

If you keep your taxes on low from the very beginning, your population grows larger much faster, which makes you more money in the long run.

Aye but it keeps you short in the short term, which is when you need quick money the most to arm and tech up - later on you can spread the costs over more territories.

As for the AOE series I've only ever played 1 and the Mythology one - 2 managed to slip me by *and I'm not kinda just waiting for it to appear on GoG*

I find that early game is when I fight neutrals the most, which are easier than factions to defeat. You start to feel the benefit from it right around when you get into your first conflict with another faction.

BTW I got this from the Total War forums and I trust those guys to know a thing or two about medieval 2. It wasn't just a couple guys either it seemed to be the 'standard' advice to give people when their economy was failing.

Hm been ages since I played Medival 2 but I tend to focus on taking new lands and conquering stuffs to get more income - that and throwing bad armies into the frey as arrowfodder to free up support ;)

I always have enjoyed playing the Britons, just for the Longbow men, but the Byzantine War Elephants rock as well!!

Mate you have to play AoE 2 it is the best one!! Cheap to get hold of and guaranteed to take up precious hours of your life you don't have to spare!!

I remember trying a demo off of some magazine when it came out, and just being blown away!! I went straight out and bought it and played it for 24 hours straight (or there abouts). I spent hours on it, but never did the Campaigns. I used to play Death Matches or create scenario's to challenge myself. Only thing I don't like about it is the population limit of 200...I want more!! However when you create your own scenario's you can put as many units as you want on it. It just means you can't create any until you are under 200 again.

Sorry to hijack your thread with AoE fanboi speak...but it is a legendary masterpiece of gaming!!

But try to pick one of the "mainstream" European factions first like England or France,it's much easier playing like that for the first time.

P.S.Doesn't anyone play Empire or Rome?

When in Rome do as the Romans do ;)

That or I've also played around being a barbarian Saxon!
