Yeah what would be the first thing you said to him if you met him?
My first fantasy novel was The Hobbit, but I think the book that really made me fall in love with fantasy was Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Weis & Hickman.
The Legend of Earthsea
Darkened_Angel & Appaliq, I must know what 'horse book' was your fav?
The Wheel of Time! And Malazan is going to addict me just that much (I'm at book 4 now, so there is still time)
The first fantasy serie that got me addicted, & which I'm still addicted to is;
The legend of the ice people written by Margit Sandemo.
It's so amazing, romantic & full of life !
I am not sure how to answer this. The fantasy series I like the most is Harry Potter, but I can't say that it got me into reading fantasy. Neither did Tolkien, really. For me, it was fantasy games like The Elder Scrolls series, Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age that got me really interested in reading fantasy.
Edit: Wow, Legend of the Ice People! I never thougth I'd see that series here. Yes, that was my first fantasy series. I read it when I was a teenager, and have read the whole series 9-10 times. Tell me - you aren't Norwegian you as well?
Noe, I'm swedish.
& yess, I love the legend of the ice people, I think I've read it that many times aswell.
Could never get enough of them.
I'm also very fond of the following series she's written, Hexmestaren & Ljusets rike? (Not sure how they're translated into english though.)
It would be something like The Warlock and The Kingdom of Light, I imagine. They are great as well. Ice People has been translated into English, btw, but it's a different way of writing than other fantasy books. Very simplistic.
Oh, I see .
Havent read them in english myself, so I dont know really ^.^
I loved the Anne McCaffrey Dragons of Pern series. I couldn't get enough of them when I was a young girl. My dad tried to keep me in books, but I just tore through them faster than he could find them. When I was an adult, I did the same thing with Brooks' Shannara series.
Can't remember, it's been like, more than 20 years. I remember reading "Torenhoog en Mijlen Breed" by Tonke Dragt, it's more sci-fi but reads like fantasy, and Thea Beckman's Children of Mother Earth (post-apocalyptic really, but honestly it's more like this fantasy world when our world's been forgotten) and Crusade in Jeans. All dutch children's books, read them before I was 10. Amazing, still love them now, only reading in dutch is kinda weird now, I read mainly english books.
I can't really recall a specific serie that got me addicted; I've kind of always enjoyed reading books, watching movies etc. which contents don't revolve around the world as we now it today. But something I liked very much when I was little was Brian Jacques "Redwall" series. Unfortunately, they have stopped publishing the books in Swedish (for some strange reason, damn the Swedish publishing companies!) so I'll have to go for a hunt on the English ones instead.
PS. Oh, and I just love "The neverending story" (Michael Ende)! Still my favourite of all books, I dare to say.
I totally forgot about catle in the attic, that was a good read but long before I truly became a fan of the genre. Brook's Shannara was what started it for me, 1000 books later and after a short lull, Goodkind's sword of truth series rejuvenated me
I used to be more of a comics freak. After being recommended by a friend to buy Sandman, I got into the fantasy genre sense then.
The Sandman is something of a rare breed in comics. There are few comics that define the fantasy genre, eg: Bone, Fables, Lucifer, Books of Magic. But out of all those books Sandman stands out great. Neil Gaiman had created his mythologies and his own world; a world filled with immortals called the Endless who are the personification of various forces of life. They live throughout the tides of time, and do their tasks forever. That is all brilliant stuff, if you tell me.
After The Sandman, I got me Neil's other books, and later I bought me The Hobbit.
The Hobbit and The Graveyard Books are my favorites.
I like The Ranger's Apprentice series!!! its very awesome by (John Flanagan) (Best Author Ever)!!!!
Harry Potter. More recently The Legend of Drizzt rekindled my interest in Fantasy.
the first fantasy series I read was David Eddings the Belgariad..... Just by chance too... when I was a wee teenager my mum picked the set up for like 4 aussie dollars ... she never ended up reading them but i couldn't put them down and claimed them for myself.... Also a tiny bit after that I got into Harry Potter ... me and my brother would have intense conversations after reading each book (like a mini book club , oh so geeky i am ) from then on I have sought out many good authors and books YAY FANTASY !!
I believe the book that got me started was Eragon, although not exactly the best series, and I anxiously await the last book in the series, it is what first got me started on so many more fantasy series.
Chronicles of Narnia,Lord of the Rings , Warcraft books
