    Hello Everyone :)
For me the first ever fantasy series I ever read was Lord of the rings, but I wasnt really into fantasy untill I began reading Raymond E. Feist, and he got me totally into the fantasy genre, I dont think I could give up fantasy genre if I tried anymore (not sure why you would want to but you never know)

I was just wondering what Series/Author got everyone else started/Addicted on fantasy.

apologies if this thread is else where but I havent seen it.

David Eddings The Belgariad really clinched it for me; I love his characters; his style; and the way he portrays his worlds. And when he has gods he gives them unique personality's to and don't make them drab and boring.

I dabbled with things like Chronicles of Narnia but yeah David Eddings - then I read Harry Potter straight after; and then LotR, so it's because of David Eddings I read Tolkien.

Well, Harry Potter is probably the first thing I read - it didn't really lead me into fantasy though. That 'honour' goes to Wheel of Time, and LoTR round about the same time. It was probably ASOIAF that really got me hooked though, since that's how I ended up here and started reading as many other authors as I could :).

I don't believe many have read this series... and it may seem like a weird series to give a 13 year old ((which I was when I first read it)) but the Spellsinger Series by Alan Dean Foster first got me into fantasy

    Okay, fine, I admit it...

It was Song of the Lioness, Tamora Pierce.

    Don't laugh.

I started with Terry Brooks' Shannara series as well. After that I read a few more series, but none that were better Shannara until I discovered A Song of Ice and Fire, and since then everything else seems like crap compared to it.

First fantasy book i read was the Hobbit, and that was only a couple of years ago, now i read pretty much every fantasy book i can get my hands on. But what really kept me going were a lot of Mercedes Lackey's books, especially the Valdemar series and the Obsidian trilogy

The Hobbit was the book that got me hooked. Until then I had read all horse books.

Me too. But replace 'horse books' with the Famous Five. I read The Hobbit when I was 6, and then got LOTR for my 7th birthday... I've loved fantasy ever since.

I can't remember whether it was The Hobbit, The Colour of Magic or The Crystal Shard that I read first but it was probably in that order.

The Lord of the Rings hooked me. There is a neat story behind me reading it too:

I saw the cover for The Fellowship of the Ring and thought it was really cool and wanted my mom to buy it for me. She wouldn't because I had never read a novel outside of school before. She didn't think I was gonna read it and just waste her money. So, my mom made a deal with me and told me that if I read To Kill A Mockingbird that she would buy the book for me. Well, it took me a few weeks or so but I read it. I liked it a lot and was the pivotal point in my life where I started to enjoy reading. She then bought me The Fellowship of the Ring and I read that and the rest of the series.

    Thanks mom!!!!!

My childhood has seemed to blend together when I try and remember what fantasy series got me hooked, but I am pretty sure it was either the Shannara series, the Belgariad or the Icewind Dale trilogy (Forgotten Realms).

Well i think it is J.k. Rowling that got me into the wonderfull world of fantasy and each time there had been a new harry potter book i didn't do anyting else than read... but it is not the best books i have read... That is the Bekgariad serie i have beenmost addicted to ever. David Eddings characters is so indvidual from each other that it almost could be some from our world...

I think the key to Eddings' success is that he manages to make his characters likeable and seem realistic, but BETTER than the real world. You want to be friends with them, you want to be them. There is no bad in them.
