Well ... I got my e-mail from New Line today saying that the RoTK extended DVD and the gift set are both now available for pre-order.

Release date 14 December ... so that's a while then yet!

    But it's coming, so here's hoping! :D

Details from the site follow ...

The extended version of The Return of the King includes 50 minutes of never-before-seen footage woven into the theatrical release of the film, along with new music composed by Howard Shore. The gift box includes the following extras: "Howard Shore: Creating The Lord of The Rings Symphony - A Composers Journey Through Middle-earth," a bonus DVD featuring excerpts of live concert footage of The Lord of the Rings Symphony recorded with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and a collectible Minas Tirith polystone statue by Sideshow Weta. These contents are presented to you in a handsome gift box, with packaging illustrated by famed artist Alan Lee.

The movie is presented on two DVDs in anamorphic 16X9 widescreen (2.35:1 aspect ratio) and three Surround Sound options: Dolby Digital EX 5.1, DTS ES 6.1 and Stereo Surround, along with English and Spanish subtitles, interactive animated menus and closed captions. This PG-13 minute film runs 250 Minutes.

Discs 1 and 2 titled, "The Feature," include the film itself along with four audio commentaries from Peter Jackson, Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom and Academy Award winners Richard Taylor, Howard Shore, Randy Cook, and many more.

The remaining discs are titled, "The Appendices." These two discs contain hours of original content including multiple documentaries and design/photo galleries with thousands of images to give viewers an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Documentaries that were started with the Special Extended DVD Editions of the first two films in the trilogy are continued here, bringing the full The Lord of the Rings experience to completion.

Disc 3 includes features on adapting the final chapters into a screenplay, planning the film, abandoned concepts such as the battle between Aragorn and Sauron, storyboards to pre-visualization, a Weta Workshop visit, an Atlas of Middle-earth, galleries of art and slideshows with commentaries by the artists, and much more!

Disc 4 consists of an interactive feature on "The M–makil Battle," a documentary on completing the trilogy, "Bigatures"-A close-up look at the detailed miniatures used in the film, galleries of behind-the-scenes photographs and personal cast photos, post-production, sound design demonstration, special documentaries on Cameron Duncan, the inspiration for the Academy Award winning song "Into the West," and much more!

Note to the British members: the pre-order is available on the UK site for the same release date

(In fact, I just pre-ordered mine and the estimated shipping date at the moment is 9th December ... here's hoping!)

Would anyone be interested in taking advantage of Amazon's Share the Love program?

When you order a DVD you can send a 10% discount to a friend.

So how it would work is everyone in the forum who wants the discount would add their email address to a list and then someone would have to buy it at the normal price and send the discount to everyone else. Then everyone else would check back to see if anyone else had added their name to the list when they make the purchase so they could get the discount too. Alot of forums do this.
