Hi, I'm looking for fantasy that is somewhat less action-driven and more atmospheric, abstract, taking time to develop the setting and delving into sensual or emotional themes. Maybe something like Kate Chopin's The Awakening, but with elvish, extraterrestrial or magical elements. I haven't read much fantasy other than The Fellowship of the Ring, which I found to be too dry. Hopefully someone can glean the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Guy Gavriel Kay. Try A Song for Arbonne, Sailing to Sarantium and its sequel Lord of Emperors or The Lions of Al-Rassan. All are based on events in European Medieval history, and all are slow moving, thoughtful and intelligent. Magic exists, but it's rare.

A Song for Arbonne looks kind of interesting, any kind of goddess elements catch my eye...
