I think it will be a draw. Both are Chosen of Mystra and possess insane magical abilities. If there's any difference, it's the age. But I don't think that matters much although I prefer Elminster personally. ;)

I'm going with Elminster on this. He's one of those bastards that is bordering godhood, or close enough >_<

Raistlin is another SOB of that standard... most probably the only character in the D&D worlds that is closest to godhood...

Yeah, I know that as well. He's in the Dragonlance series. The only reason why I mention him is because he's from D&D, just like Elminster. :p

I'd say Elminster, because of all your reason, and becaue Elminster is level 34, and Alustriel 29 in FR campaign setting :p

Man...my BG character was higher than that, if Elminster is only 34, my character would have wooped Elminster silly.

    Ok, from what I've gathered:

Elminster is a level 24 wizard
Alustriel is a level 20 wizard

Not to forget that Elminster got some multiclass levels as a fighter and rogue if I remember. On the issue of level though, my reply to you Met, is that gaming and canon in D&D are totally different. While it's possible to raise a character to insanely high levels in gaming, the canon put in some form of restriction in this area. Thus, it's unfair to compare a PC to a canon character in D&D. And one more freakin' scary thing I've found out about 24th level characters is there are two characters that I know of who has reached that status, namely Matron Baenre and Zaknafein. Pretty scary... >_<

Yes I know that games are a totally different thing, but in the game his level was far superior. That's why I went and found out his fluff levels instead.

Elminster's and Alustriel's minor classes are not that high in level, so I disregarded them since they don't have much say in who's going to win. Both are predominantly magic users, so that's where I took the comparison from.

Zaknafein is lvl24? What on earth...Drizzt is only lvl16, but he's just as good :S

Actually, Ed Greenwood (the FR creator) made it very clear that only the novels of the series can be counted as canon. The games are out of the picture. Maybe in the future, we may get a canon game for FR, but that's provided that EG gave the canon rights over to some gaming company. And yeah, for Zaknafein's level, I was also like  when I saw his level stat. I can't imagine this is the case since IMO, Drizzt is just as good as Zaknafein, but then again, it can be said that he held back. That assumption though, looked stupid to me when I saw Drizzt battling his father in the Exile novel of the Dark Elf trilogy. Actually, if I remembered correctly, Zaknafein is the only warrior that reached the 24th level cap from all the people whom I've seen able to reach that cap or above. That being said though, the fact that I saw Zak's insane level stat was somewhere pretty long ago. Even earlier than when I found out this forum, so I guess EG might do some retcon concerning this area, be it that he had already do that or in the future... I dunno
