I decided to make a thread dedicated to uncovering the secrets of the mythical creature: The dragon.

This thread is basically for discussing dragons, and everything about them. (How they fly, why they're so AWESOME, etc.)

They are awesome because: they are extremely wise and full of knowledge; they can't be flanked, you can't roll a 'death roll' on them; they have wings; they have scales; they are spitting fire; they are huge; they have beautiful eyes; they are ancient and mystic; they can fly; you can ride them; they rule; they can be different colours, even golden; huuhh..

Honestly? I don't care much about dragons. Thats just a flying giant lizard that spits fire and has a brain that between species apparently varies pea-sized all the way to normal human size. Killed a few though, they make quite nice challenges, especialy the bigger ones.

I think it's fitting that my first post on a thread is this Dragon one as to me, Dragons are one of the biggest symbols that represent Fantasy.
Of all mythical/fantasy creatures out there, Dragons are at the top of my favourites and although there are many variations of these magnificent beasts (and unfortunately some of those variations don't portray Dragons as they should ) I rarely find the presence of a Dragon as anything less than Epic.

Since it's fantasy, how can dragons not be portrayed as they should?

Just personal preference really on what I think a Dragon should represent based on the styles of Dragon I grew up with.
I'm not saying that everyone should conform to a strict set of guidelines, that's what I love about fantasy that anything is possible and there is no limit on imagination or creativity. However I do think there is a point that if you change a style of creature/character so much that it's only similarity is its name, is it still the same thing or have you simply created something new.

There's no option there for "meh, they're okay", which is basically my view. Sure they're big and powerful, but they've been done so often and in so many ways that they just don't stand out any more.

Uber-powerful, wild and primal, scary and dangerous, intelligent, ancient, breath weapons, different colours. I love dragons. They are one of the staples of fantasy that never get old.

Dragons always kick-ass, no matter if they're good or evil they're always among the coolest characters in a story!
