I'm sorry, such a biased and uncompromising and ridiculously unreasonable view is wasteful in my eyes.

If you are anything to go on, books dont develop an open mind.............

Fortunaterly, I dont make such brash overgeneralisations.

Intepretation of life differs from one person to another. I would rather experience the things that bring me joy than spend my life learning. I learn what I need to and that is that.

Moving back onto topic. You seem to generalise video game players in all the same cetegory. We are not all addicts, we are not unhealthy, and we don't all have a poor social standing. I myself do a variety of things other than playing video games. My physical fitness is fairly good as I play rugby, swim, and do weights. I also have a multitude of good friends and enjoy going out with them.

I love video games, and I don't "only" play video games otherwise I would be unable to provide input on this forum concerning books.

Noone has yet said that books are the lesser power compared to video games. All I have said personally is that a video can give you the same pleasure's as a book. They both provide for different needs in different manners.

You say that playing video games to a habit is bad for you, as you state with poor health and social interaction. I can tell you that being addicted to books can provide the exact same thing as a video game. Sitting for hours on end just reading books can apply strain on your eyes, and the lack of movement does not help. Bookworms as it were are not terribly great with social interaction and are generally loners and introvert.

How does having outdated graphics affect the arguement in this context? It is only natural they get outdated, but it does not mean the gameplay of a game becomes worse. There are still many who enjoy the older outdated games. Also since when are books all clear? There are many books that are unclear, poorly written and boring. Imagination can only go so far in different people and books are a medium that help to reach higher levels of imagination. In that way books too can be outdated if you take that stand. Newer writers learn from older writers, improvise on the other authors failings as it were, and hence provide a more enjoyable book. Yet does that mean we should no longer read those older books?

I say no. In the same way, just because a game gets older does not mean it becomes less enjoyable.

Video games, and their video wares
What does one that plays video games share?
The lovely fell feel of a sweaty chair
for discomforts while he sits he does not care.

If life is not for one to learn
you'll find no fire, where the soul used to burn
and stimuli is all he yearns
he finds himself still, while the world turns

It is not wasteful unless you declare it to be so, Crusader...
If it wasteful by ones declaration, one does not pay mind to the subject...
So you would dismiss all because it does not go your way?
    Very sad thing to say...

I pay you no ill will, for truth be told.
the very reason why this hatter grew bold.

Books are important in my life, and I hold true to my books.
Nothing wrong with a game or two,
but self-satisfaction never is better than a good book

If youd payed attention to what ive been saying thats the very point i was making:

your dismissing games because they dont go your way.

youre making unsupported generalisations about games and gamers thats are, for want of a better word, offensive.

Saying gamers sit in sweaty charis with undeveloped social skills is no better than saying mexicans are lazy or black people are thugs............hence, why I react to overgeneralisation because it is never representative ands often ignorant.

Hey, I'd like to point out that some over-generalizations are true. Like the one that most Asian girls can't drive. >.>

But I do agree with both Crusader and Met - they're making excellent points. It's a standing joke that I try to never agree with Cru, but in this case... *cough*

i dont find that to be true.. me and alot of my friends game a lot.. i have prefect social skills. i wouldnt think sitting at home reading a book all day gives you social skillz. least with gaming your getting on line interaction with real people..

Dwimmerlaik, I think you have misinterpreted what he is saying. Crusader is saying that playing games does "not" mean you have poor social skills.

Then I apologise for hostile remarks...
Now that I look back, my behavior has been wrong

I am taking it too personal for the course of debate,
I have deep ties and the love of books.

I would not be the best person to debate this one subject.

Dear Crusader and Meteorian, this Hatter humbly asks that you forgive his wrong-doing.
    I stand corrected, as unusual.

Hatter, I think the problem stems from the fact that youre being overly defensive for book when no one is actually attacking them, if you read my initial post in this thread I stated that the two forms of media are wildy varying, thus the impact of each upon a person can never be the same, but that does not mean either is less than the other.

I think that most people are not interested in the stories in video games, they just want to throw themselves at the bad guys with a gun, so I said no.

    No, no, no... :nono:

I know many people who are more interested in the story as in playing a game, for example most of the Halo gamers.

Of course playing the game is important for a real fan, but if you don't understand the story(which is really cool!), then you are... an idiot, and not a fan! :p

Whatever... I say no, because you can play a game without understanding it, but you can't read a book without understanding it, well it's difficult.

Although It is in my opinion (and this is just about the story in games not the quality and experience of games) that very few games have really a good story, that is as good as the ones of a book.

In another case there are also a lot of games which do have very good stories but not such good or even terrible gameplay which also lowers the quality of the game, thus the experience will not be as good as reading a book.

Indeed I agree that books aswell as games can get you hooked up in a chair and have a serious impact on your social behaviour, but that also depends from individual to individual. This is something you can't generalise, cause certainly not everybody has that problem.

To find a game which both a good story and good gameplay is rare. I even had games which did have a detailed story, but because the stories were often boring I skipped the details of it.

Same with books that I had a few books but because the details were too boring I was always skipping pages.

Like Crusader said they can't be compared, but in some ways they can cause they do have a lot in common.

Yes. I looked for this and found Halo.

    Story: Awesome!

    Gameplay: Awesome, too!

this is a very pointless poll... :)

there is absolutly no comparison between books and video games...

i never found the playing of video games nearly as good as the reading of a good book... (*cough*... "shannara"! :))...
