There are toxins in the food we eat, the perfumes in our shampoo, deodorants and soap, the clothes we wear, furniture, computers, appliances, toxins in our houses and apartments... everywhere and everything. Cigarettes are bad, no doubt about that. But second hand smoke has been trumped up as a major health hazard by the PC crowd and on very flimsy evidence.

Ah yeah, fair enough. It really does effect kids. I was reading before that in the US something like 6,000 infants under the age of 18 months were treated for something to do with second hand smoke. Many of them had to be hospitalized for it. And that was just in one year. I feel so sorry for kids like that. They don't deserve to get sick because of what the selfish people around them are doing.

firstly, the study you are quoting has been uncovered as being funded by the tobacco industry. it is not an independent study, as it was portrayed to be. the study failed to declare a conflict of interest, and The declaration of interest was unusual and incomplete. The Center for
Indoor Air Research funds two types of research, peer-reviewed and ‘special reviewed’ with the latter awarded to tobacco industry
executives. Special reviewed projects are more likely to support the tobacco industry position and to be used by the industry to argue
against smoking bans in public places. Evidence obtained subsequently shows that this was a ‘special reviewed’ project and
comparisons of the original protocol and the final paper, as well as documented meetings with tobacco company executives and
consultants, suggest that the industry played a greater role in the production of the paper than was implied by the declaration of
    competing interests.
secondly, the average age of the participants was 52 in the first intake and while the study placed a large emphasis on marital status, (the thought being that a non smoking wife would have more exposure to SHS from a smoking husband) it didn't take into account that the smoking husband works between 8-10 hrs a day, sleeps on average 8 hrs a day, and socialises on average 2 hrs a day, leaving only 6 hrs of potential exposure. 1/4 of the time it is supposedly based on. The study also failed to mention that of the follow up 30+ yrs later, many of those in the first intake, due to age at time of study start, had passed on. it categorised the non smoking partner as being "exposed" whether the smoker had passed on 25 yrs later or 1 day later.

^ Oh man this is too good. Don't you love it when "actual science" is complete bullshit funded by the tobacco industry.

according to the Brittish Medical Association, even if taken at face value, the report fails to make a dent in the body of evidence opposing it.

I don't know how anyone could even argue anything at all in favour of smoking. If they are it seems like they are just trying to kid themselves into some sort of false hope.

Yeah, but you aren't arguing in favour of it. I know plenty of smokers who know that smoking is bad for them, and that their SHS is bad too. Which is fine. A lot of my friends smoke actually. Which doesn't bother me as long as they don't smoke right into other people, which unfortunately most people in Melbourne seem to do haha.

I live about 30 minutes from Gothenburg which is a small city compared to any other city in the world, I think.
I absolutely agree with Crouton about the air. I am glad to live close to the coast where I can get my fix of sea breeze once in a while when the winds are right.
I lived in a cottage for a year when I studied carpentry close to the border to Norway and that was awesome. The nights and early morning were pitch black and I could
head down in a minute to the cliffs to fish. As to smoking I cannot afford it, but when I have a few bucks left I buy a pack of Borkum Riff and a few times each year I take my pipe up to
some quiet place and enjoy a good puff. I've smoked cigs but they're not for me.
Last year and this year I haven't smoked at all and frankly I don't need to, for which I'm glad. It's the equivalent of spoiling myself with a good cup of strong coffee or
chinese tea. Smokers in this city is generally well behaved. I get mad a few times each year by smokers insisting on standing just outside entrances etc.
    See ya!

I know what you mean about the coastal air Per! I went down the coast a while ago myself and the air was amazing compared to what I live in here in the city. I wish I could spend more time out int he country but I have to stay here while I have Uni.

I wish smokers in my city were well-behaved. They all seem to think they are the only ones using the streets!

And I live in gothenburg, second biggest city in sweden. But its not nearly as big enough to actually effect the air. the air here is actually really good. that goes for all of sweden I guess. Thats a huge perk for living in small countries. Smokers do annoy me though, when they decide that they can stay inside the bus shelters. You chose to smoke, then you also stay out in the rain if you feel such a big need to smoke while its raining, you don't go under the busstop shelter thingy and poison us others.. When I don't wanna make remarks I just start fake coughing really loudly and they eventually go out, standing there looking sour.. well.. too bad for you <.<

And that was a really crappy comment you made about Crouton Sparrow, pretty uncalled for.

Yeah that's something I never understood. I went on a bus trip to Berlin once and there were people there who absolutely had to smoke in between the stops. I mean, c'mon!!!
So, there we sit with f**kin sour smoke fills the bus because these poor outcasts had to smoke in the bus toilet. If you can't hold out for 2 or 3 hours during a bus ride you should really
consider quitting. There's no excuse for that. Since when do we respect those who can't hold their liquor, barfing about and acting crazy? Not sure that's a good analogy but you get my point.
Sorry if this is considered a hate-speech against smokers, it's really not. I just think some are better at it than others.

My mom always brings nicotinell, those pills with nicotine in them when she knows she wont be able to smoke for a long time or the time for smoking at the place she's going isnt really the best.
But I guess some people have more or less respect for others and that goes for everything, not just the smoking, although that is pretty visible.

This I agree with 100%. I have friends who always go out of their way to make sure they smoke far away from others, and that their smoke never blows into the face of other people. If only everyone was like that, but it seems a lot of the time that people like this are a minority.

I live near Stockholm and the air is pretty decent here as well. But oh my god, when you go a little bit higher up in the country.
The air is amaaaazing. We have a summer place by a lake in the middle of nowhere and it just smells so nice. The difference is actually pretty huge.

Lol I first read that as "Summer Palace" and was like shit, is she royalty? I get that feeling though. We have a Summer home as well down the coast and the difference in the air is so huge.
